First, sorry about my english. It's not my mother language.
Well, I have changed my motherboard only a few weeks ago ( to a VIA K7VMM ) and I have now problems not only with Knoppix but also other Live-CD's.
The fact is the first screen appears "boot: ", but when I press enter key, it seems to be working but suddenly a black screen cut my hopeness to have again Knoppix in my PC.
Any idea? Perhaps problems sre in the BIOS?
Thanks.

--Try booting with a framebuffer, see if that fixes it.

boot: ' fb1024x768 '

I have tried with a lot of configuration like framebuffers, no scsi, no pcmcia, xmodules, etc. but it doesn't work. What a pity

I have a ECS K7VMM motherboard with an Athlon 1600 and experience the same problem. After the Knoppix boot screen the screen just goes black and hangs.

Does anyone have any idea how to fix it?

After installing some distros and search again and again in the net, IMHO:
-Kernels 2.4.x usually don't work with this motherboard (k7vmm): distros like Red Hat 8, Mandrake 9.0, Debian 3.0 with kernel 2.4.x and Debian based ones with kernel 2.4.x, Lycoris...
I could only boot Suse 8.0 (kernel 2.4.18-4GB), Debian 3.0 with kernel 2.2.20 and Yoper.
-Bad support of ECS, specially in this motherboard. BIOS of model k7vmm+ (similar but more modern than k7vmm) has been updated to fix this problem but k7vmm has last BIOS update on August 2002, and ECS didn't give a solution about this problem.
So, the only way is to change the motherboard or to wait to see if new kernels support this stupid motherboard.

I had a ECS K7S5A *think thats the model number 0_o*. Anyways I bought a soyo dragon ultra platinum edition due to the fact I believed the ECS mobo had the AGP port screwed up and I am too lazy to RMA, the problem I had was no sound, but once i switched out mobos and got knoppix reinstalled earlier this week I was overjoyed to hear the startup music for the first time :o. Now only if i can get my room mate to figure out how to reboot out of linux or for that matter use linux so i dont have to reboot i would stay in knoppix indefinitely :D good job on the software I actually dumped RedHat 8.0 to come to this distro not a problem yet ;)

**Sorry this is a bit off-topic**

I have no problems using Knoppix with a K7S5A, Knoppix detects everything just fine, even sound works great.

Note that the K7S5A is using a SIS 735 chipset, and not a VIA chip.

I have ECS k7vmm with Duron1300.
I boot knoppix: "knoppix xmodule=vesa" and work fine.

I have this board on a machine also and I only get a black screen. I'm going to try this option right now.....no diffence, still goes to black screen. If I try failsafe I get a screen full of CPU and memory related variables then it just stops.

Actually I have the same problem with K7VMM (http://www.knoppix.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8296) but I think I just post a reply in this thread. I am new to Linux.

Yesterday I googled the web and find this! (http://www.mepis.org/node/view/345)
I haven't try this thing called Mepis, cause my internet connection is dial-up and u know how sad it is :(

Just booted on my K7VMM with no trouble at all, in fact I'm posting from MEPIS right now. Unfortunately the laptop with the wireless card I want to try this with only has 48mb of ram and they say that is not enough to run the live CD. We shall see because I'm going to jam it in there anyway :)
