After playin around in knoppix for a while i decided that it was pretty damn good. So i decided to install it to my harddrive.
My harddrive is 38GB where 5 GB is for Windows XP, 29GB NTFS where my files are and the remainder i used for linux. I used partiton magic to set up a partition where i could install linux, this i did today.

using the knoppix-installer command i entered all the details it asked for and it seemed to be going well
then when doing something ( installing or copying files or something) it froze at about 54 per cent and gave an error consisting of some words in brackets... im sorry this may seem hazy but its annoying having to do it over and over....

Also when trying to partiton via the knoppix installer it tells me

opened disk read only
you have no permission to write
FATAL ERROR: cannot read disk drive
press any key to exit etc

to top it off windows XP is not booting (which i know why...) and i have conveinently lost my disc for it. although i know people who can "find" it for me.

for now im limited somewhat to knoppix...

I did XP + Partition Magic + Knoppix install and had a couple of problems too.

What's the reason for XP not booting?

it goes to the windows xp logo and blue loading bar, then to a blue xp stlye screen and says its looking for two files and cant find them, one of which is chkdsk... prob due to me messing about with partitions. Hopes of finding the iso for xp are dwindling, just hoping the CD is hanging about sumwhere

still thank god for knoppix :P

Okay, so at least the boot process is still seeing Windows. That's good! :)

Can you cancel out of running chkdsk?

it doesnt even start it, it looks for the files then restarts...over and over and over

okay, the xp problem is solved, i had somehow set its partition to hidden, hence it couldnt find the files....doh!

i have a poor mans install of knoppix but what i'd really like to do is set up a dual boot system, but im beset by the problems i listed in my first post...

What was the fix?
The changing filesystem to hidden thing is a bug in QTparted; it seems to use vfat(hidden) as a default vfat setting instead of just vfat. I lost my Windows partition for about a week once that way.

Yeah, please fill us in - inquiring minds want to know (in case it happens to us)! :D

I wondered who hosed that up. I was blaming it on knoppix-installer itself.
