I am getting an error
"Cannot initialize agpgart module"
and get a dirty screen and processing sort of stops there.

It sounds like you will need to use a cheat code
try "knopppix vga=normal" or check out the entire
listing of cheat codes if you know what your hardware

What video card? Which kernel are you using. With my (old) i810 video card agpgart would not initialize using the default 2.4 kernel but was OK with the 2.6 kernel. Something to do with the hardware detection version, agpgart was OK with previous Knoppix versions. Knoppix 3.4 was the first to use the 2.6 kernel.
