Cannot login! Fresh install ~ About to pull hair out!

Hi,

I have just done a fresh install of knoppix to my hdd. Install seemed to work perfectly. I boot and all my internals are detected. I get to the debian / KDE login screen and my root and knoppix logins will not work. I enter my root access and knoppix access and passwords all correct, the goes to black screen and reloads login.

I am stuck and pulling my hair out.

Where am i going wrong? I am new to linux, should mention that. :)

I could be way off, but something makes me think that knoppix is using a different keyboard layout
than the one you used to enter your password info in the first place.

If that's true I'm not sure how to fix it though. Have you tried entering "failsafe" at boot and then
logging in at the commandline?

thanks it all seems to work now. Not sure exactlz what i did to change but oh well.

Thanks for the support. I now am not able to use mz cd rom. Will check out other forums for this. :(

The problem was because the the session type is selected as default for the first time. When you login for the first time you will have to select the session type "kde, xfce" etc. Next time it will work.

First of all, thank you for a great product. I can't understand how Knoppix configures all my hardware when the commercial disto I have been using cannot :?:

Unfortunately, I have the same problem as those above. I am used to having a root account and a user account. After install Knoppix 3.7 on my hardrive, which went without a hitch, I cannot login as root to make system changes. I did an apt-get update-dist and now I cannot login as root to make changes to the system which require "root privledges"

I tried the above, however this also requires root, so I'm stuck. I hate to re-install Knoppix and go through another 8 hrs of download just because I don't have root priveleges.

Can someone assists :?:

Thank you for the reply Markus. First of all Knoppix is great, I just have to get used to using Debian which has not been tweaked with additional gui additions. Originally after the hd install I could not log on as root in the pop up window to do Administrative tasks. I could log on as root by typing "su" in a command window.

So I got out my Linux Administration and Installation Guide and after opening the console, I typed su. The root command "#" appeared without a password. I then typed "passwd" and a line appeared asking for the new password. I typed in my new password twice and then typed "exit" twice.

I can now logon as root when asked for a password and make administrative changes when needed.

Ok, looks like you did a knoppix style install then. Just note that many changes you make won't stick between reboots as the install behaves like the LiveCD and recreates several config files every bootup. Otherwise it's ok I suppose, just really different from any other linux out there which makes it difficult to follow any howtos.

Markus, thanks for the reply. Is there another type of install that would be better for a daily driver installation than the Knoppix style I have done. If so lay it on me :lol:

Debian style install gives you the closest to debian, not pure debian though as the init scripts and such are different.

Beginner style is quite like debian but runs hardware autoconfig on each bootup and thus recreates some config files.
I've always chosen debian style, OTOH I'm running Kanotix now which again is like knoppix but based purely on the unstable branch of debian whereas Knoppix is a mix between mostly testing, some unstable and IIRC some stable. The mix sometimes makes upgrading Knoppix a PITA so if you're going to reinstall you might as well try kanotix. Only thing is that the current Kanotix release has problems with grub on some computers, not all.
