Can't offload to Lexar stick

My laptop with XP won't boot. I am trying to recover the data and I came across this great website. I can load Knoppix 3.7 and I can see the data files in Konqueror. I am newbie and I have pored through as much as I can but so far no luck. I have a Iomega PCMCIA Clik 40Mb card (I have never used it before, just given by friend so I am not sure if it needs formatting). I get the little green triangle on the desktop with hde1. My data files are more than 40Mb so I bought a Lexar 128Mb USB Jumpdrive (stick, thumbdrive, flashdrive etc...), having seen it mentioned in these forums. I also have a USB 3.5 inch external floppy drive. I am trying to copy the data on to the Jumpdrive but it doesn't seem to be recognised.

I've picked up a few commands from the forums, hope it helps someone out there figure what is wrong:

dmesg|grep ub say?
from what i see you might need to format the card,
the usb stick seems to be there but i need some more,
The usbstick might need reformating to fat32 but no certainties yet

I can write to the USB external floppy drive although it doesn't appear on the desktop. My plan is to write the data to the jumpdrive, put it in a Windows 98SE and save the data there then figure out the best version of Linux to run from the Laptop. Knoppix is quite impressive.

to be honest i canot see your driver either, BUT i can see a unrecognized usbdevice...

as weird as it may sound you managed to find a usbstick that is not recognized as such??
hmm, have you tried to remove ALL partitions on it and reformat it? (on another computer using win with drivers instaled)?
repartitioneing and reformating is last resort i think. weird, i have come across lots of usb disks and pens and all have worked this far. hmm, atleast the one i had trouble with worked after partitioning&formating. that MAY damage your disk though.
hmm, you have a CDburner.
oh, don't say anything, let me guess, that the cdburner is ocupied by the knoppix disk.
otherwise that would have worked.

I've tried reformating the Jumpdrive in Win98SE on another machine and tried it again in Knoppix but same result. I didn't dare use Fdisk on it yet, I want to try the tip that you very kindly included as a link in your message. I have an idea, correct me if I am wrong: could it be that the stick is factory-formatted to FAT16 ? You're right, my CD burner is the only CD drive in the laptop. I've done a lot of trawling on the Net, seems like there are tons of people out there with similar problems, regarding USB stick being recognised. I am trying to find the quickest way to off load the files from the XP drive and then start afresh with Linux. I have been downloading ISO images of other live CDs just to see if they would recognise the Jumpdrive. I figured that I could continue with my work while it's downloading and then I could see if that particular distribution recognises the stick - the exercise would also help note which flavour of Linux appeals to me. Both Suse and Slack recognised the Jumpdrive straight off but when I try to mount, they both give me 'bad block' or incorrect filesystem type error messages. That got me thinking that your suspicions were probably right, they can see the device, they just don't like the media format. So my next approach is to try Harry's idea, if that fails I will have to go and buy another USB stick, perhaps a brand that is definitely detected by Knoppix (my favourite distro still) and hopefully check that it's FAT32 formattable (or even NTFS). Could I format the current USB stick through Knoppix?

yes you could certainly use qtparted (or fdisk and mkdosfs -F 32 /dev/devicepartition in combination) to format/partition the stick.
all "I" have tried worked with that, but you may have bad luck...(you seem to be prone to that).
vfat is by the way a "collection name" for fat 12, 16, 32. so it shoud work

I successfully retrieved all of my data from the XP drive. In the end the best and fastest method I managed to figure out is to load Slaxware LiveCD which has a nice feature to load into RAM and fire up two Konqueror windows, one of the hard disk and the other of the CD ROM drive, and simply copy from one window to the other and bingo, everything came over. I now look forward to learning more about working solely with Linux.

should work with most smaller linix bootcds. like DamnSmallLinux, slax...
