"The German tech news site Heise Online reports that Knoppix 3.8 is being presented at CeBIT (Hall 9, Stand C39). Knoppix 3.8 has kernel 2.6 as default, KDE 3.3.2, OpenOffice 1.1.4, as well as... Firefox 1.0 and Thunderbird 1.0. There's also a really neato new thing involving unionfs . It seems to imply that you can change most anything on the running system, even as it is running from CD - and changes can be stored too (even on NTFS)."

http://linux.slashdot.org/linux/05/03/01/2329225.shtml?tid=190&tid=90&tid=106

Let's hope that the download will be available beforehand so that people won't have to travel to CeBIT just in ordert to get the recent release in time.

Let's hope that the download will be available beforehand ....
My expectation is just the opposite, 3.8 will be used as a draw for the show and so it will be very unlikely that it will be available beforehand. I just hope that is will be available legitimately shortly after the release (unlike the DVD version of 3.7 which didn't seem to see quick release through legitimate channels).

Is there anywhere that hosts daily builds of Knoppix on the net that can be tested out, like other distributions and open source software often have? Or is more tightly controlled?
Looking forward to trying 3.8 with respect to using it as a rescue disk - hope it has improved NTFS read capability as previous versions seem to be able to read about 60% of an NTFS disk and then hang in deep directory structures, when trying to copy to another FAT32 drive/partition.
Its been a few years since I dabbled in Linux and Knoppix liveCD is just what I wanted back then but got frustrated that there was nothing this easy to use.

Just a guess, but I expect because they are getting it ready and testing everything now (if it has not already gone to get CD's pressed). It's not very reasonable to be critical that they don't want to delay things too long, add new software, and not be able to test completely before a release deadline that they can't move.

Hi all,

there is already a screenshot of Knoppix 3.8 in the recent print edition of the c't magazine, so my guess would be that it's already finished for quite some time.

Seems indeed as if it will be the same procedure as in the past years: We won't see it when it's ready, we'll see it when Klaus Knopper wants us to see it. That is of course his own decision, and it's up to us whether we like it.

It has already gone go get CDs pressed and on CeBit they normally press _many_ CDs.

And yes, I guess you will have to wait like always ... ;-)

I also hope KDE 3.4 will be in the official 3.8 (whenever that will come out), but if not you can just get it yourself:

apt-get update
apt-get -t unstable install kdelibs4

from CD should just work ;-).

Thats what UnionFS is all about; if you wondered. I think this will also help Klik a lot in the future. :-)

If thats true it will be well worth the wait!!! So we would need to burn everything to rewriteables then right?

One thing intrigues me about the new Knoppix 3.8.

How can you write new stuff to the disk when the disk is chock full at the start?

Does it require DVD?

Edix asks whether we use rewriteables. If so, I find 700MB RW harder to find than 700MB CD-R. 650MB is more the norm for CD-RW

It uses a new file system technique that allows you to stack filesystems. I believe Knoppix 3.8 will use UnionFS to stack a writeable filesystem on top of a read-only filesystem so that changes to the stack appear to be made to the read-only but are in fact saved to the writeable filesystem. See this article http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/7714 and the UnionFS project page http://www.fsl.cs.sunysb.edu/project-unionfs.html.

Does anybody know if the changes done to the filesystem can be saved back to the disk (CD/DVD)????
Can one create a "custom" ISO-image of the changed system, e.g. remove / install new programs and then create a new ISO from the running system.

If not, then please somebody try to implement this - imaginate this would be the most flexible linux system in the world - install and remove packages, change themes, include demos and files and then burn new CD !!!!!

Thanks for the minirt.gz. I tried reading the announcement http://www.heise.de/newsticker/meldung/56923 but I do not understand German. Is Knoppix 3.8 a public release? Or is it a private release like Knoppix 3.7 PC Welt or 3.5 DVD edition?

I took a look at the minirt and examined the linuxrc file. So that other people could study it, I posted the linuxrc file http://www.virtualacuity.com/james/knoppix-unionfs/linuxrc-3.8.html and the diff between the 3.7 version and the 3.8 version http://www.virtualacuity.com/james/knoppix-unionfs/linuxrc-3.8.diff.html. In linuxrc (http://www.virtualacuity.com/james/knoppix-unionfs/linuxrc-3.8.html) at line 645 is where unionfs is used. According to it, the ramdisk is mounted on top of the readonly CDROM so that we can make "live changes" to the CDROM but the changes are actually written to the ramdisk.

Is Knoppix 3.8 a public release? Or is it a private release like Knoppix 3.7 PC Welt or 3.5 DVD edition?

In LICENSE.txt it says:

The KNOPPIX software collection and all included programs that are
authored by Klaus Knopper, are subject to the terms and conditions
of the GNU GENERAL PUBLIC LICENSE Version 2, as quoted herein.

Please note that this license does NOT automatically apply to
third-party programs included on this CD. Check
/usr/share/doc/*/copyright* and other supplied license files
of each software package carefully for more information.

In index.html it only says (in German): "Production of this CD-ROM was sponsored by c't", but it doesn't mention that c't holds special rights on parts of the content. So it seems to me as if this would be legal to distribute. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Yeah, it's a sponsored beta release [it's freely redistributable just as any other Knoppix]... Basically it's released first at CeBit to encourage people to come out to the conference... In the past I beleive they had LiveDVD version at one of those conferences also.

I got the 3.7 CeBit release wayback before the "official" was released, wanted to try out the NX server stuff (which is quite cool). I was going to do a Centrino Laptop distro off of 3.7, but I think I'll wait till I see what the whole unionfs thing is like.

T'would be nice if someone who has a copy could ISO it and post a Torrent... hint, hint

I'm surprised this isn't mentioned in the post, but is this for an English Version or a German version? This is an English forum so many people may Expect this is an English version, but since CeBIT is in Germany my guess is the CeBIT version is German. If so is there an English version? Any secrets one needs to know about the cheat code to switch it to English (like where the = sign is)? Or Maybe this isn't even an issue at all in 3.8 (Fabian indicated there might be a nice boot menu system, it would sure be nice to have one version that worked in both cases by selecting the right options from the boot menu.)

The only difference between the two versions AFAIK is that the english version has lang=us as a parameter in the isolinux boot up info...
if you use "knoppix lang=us" on the German CD everything is English, just as if you use "knoppix lang=de" on the English CD you get all German, lang=it for Italian... etc, etc.

I'm surprised this isn't mentioned in the post, but is this for an English Version or a German version? It defaults to both a German keyboard map and German for all dialogs & menus. Like pureone had mentioned, this can be changed to US English at boot up by using:
knoppix lang=us
where the '=' is done with SHIFT + 0

I have already hexedited and created a fully default US English version of this 3.8 ISO file. If anyone is interested, the process for hexediting the ISO is described here http://www.knoppix.net/forum/viewtopic.php?p=78397#78397. The hexedit allows me to edit the /boot/isolinux/isolinux.cfg file. I searched & then replaced every entry of lang=de to lang=us.

Just exactly how would one do that? I've got Azureus but couldn't figure out how to help out. I d-loaded the ISO via e-mule, took a day and a night, terribly slow, but couldn't figure out how to contribute it to a torrent once it was d-loaded. Would like to help out, I have a cable internet connection. Any hints appreciated. BTW, 3.8 is kind of cool, Knoppix just keeps getting better all the time. This is a German distro, you must use shift-zero to get the '=' sign to use the cheat code "lang=us" if you are in America. Worked great. How come Germans have a different keyboard? Different characters? Just wondering.

Just open the torrent with a bittorrent client. When the client asks you (windows) where you want to download to, choose the location of the existing file. If you are using Linux, just cd to the directory the iso is in before opening the torrent. If you are using bittorrent 4.0 for windows, note that it will try to download to the desktop by default. You will need to change the "settings" within the GUI to make it ask you where to download each file. When it sees that the file already exists, it will check the existing file. Then, it will automatically seed the file. I'm on cable and got the file via bittorrent in about 6 hours. Now all we need is to slashdot the torrent, as to make it stay up long term. Not everyone reads these forums, you know.

News from Distrowatch.com:

Knoppix 3.8 CeBIT edition available
Knoppix As has become a tradition at this time the year, the developers of Knoppix have put together a special edition of the popular live CD to give away during the CeBIT exhibition in Hannover, Germany. ZDNet, in its article entitled Linux a picture of health at CeBIT, described the events at the Knoppix booth on Friday: "Klaus Knopper attracted a packed crowd on Friday lunchtime when he demonstrated the latest version of his Linux distribution. So many people turned up to Knopper's event that there wasn't a spare seat to be had, and our correspondent on the ground reports that 'a mad rush broke out' when Knoppix 3.8 CDs were distributed." If you haven't been able to make it to CeBIT, don't despair - although Knoppix 3.8 has not been released publicly, it is still GPL software and some of the lucky attendees were happy to share it with the rest of us. Get the Knoppix 3.8 torrents from here or here.

Since the (test) version 1.0.1 of the ipw2200 driver ist included with Knoppix 3.8 my Intel 2200BG mini-pci wireless adapter was auto-detected at boot. To establish a wireless connection using the tools provided by Knoppix was very easy.

After downloading the wpa_supplicant, I even got a WPA connection to my ap. Cool.

Powermanagement works flawlessly, wireless connections with no problems. Almost no reason to run Windows XP on my centrino laptop... if there wasn't... well... Warcraft III does not work on Linux, yet.

Oh -- 2 problems: my external firewire hd does not work and I could not unmount my usb stick (always busy).

When you ask "to the disk", do you mean the CDR disk? The very nature of a CDR/CDROM disc implies that it is difficult (more like impossible) to write to the disc, especially if the disc is 695MB or 700MB. If it was possible to write another track or another session to a CDR, there would still be the issue of UnionFS mounting this data on top of the existsing UnionFS mount. In theory it sounds as if it can be done but as with many things, the devil is in the details/implementation.

When you ask "to the disk", do you mean the hard disk? If so, then it should be much easier to create a place to store the data. The it would be up to the user to figure out how to UnionFS mount the stored data on top of the existsing UnionFS mount.

Please see my post in this thread here http://www.knoppix.net/forum/viewtopic.php?p=78447#78447. It details how Knoppix creates the UnionFS mounts on bootup.

Kanotix 2005-1 ( with kernel 2.6.10-kanotix-8 ) uses apm poweroff in most settings and will like Knoppix 3.8 ( with kernel 2.6.11 and acpi=off ) only recognize 1 of 2 CPUs on Intel SMP PCs.

There's a good article by Kyle Rankin (author of Knoppix Hacks): "Knoppix 3.8 and UnionFS. Wow. Just Wow."
http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/wlg/6654

According to Rankin: "This also means that if you set up a persistent home directory, you can potentially back up all of these changes and restore them at boot. In fact, Knoppix 3.8 already has a modified persistent home script that does just this (although it's still a beta feature so expect to see bugs here and there). Knoppix can even detect when you have done this on a drive when it boots, and will let you choose what features to restore from this image (if any). If you let it time out, Knoppix does the safe thing and doesn't load any of the settings."

I've put a Knoppix 3.8, modified so it will also run under Windows, in amongst my other torrents at http://home.btconnect.com/chrisandcarolyn/torrents/. It is set up for US English .......

Thanks Chris, that's a great contribution. The torrent is very slow, though. I'm getting 1-10 kB/s; usually I get about 150 kB/s. So far I've downloaded 107 MB and uploaded 268 MB, with an estimated 32 hours to go.

If anyone out there has successfully downloaded this iso, how about starting up your bittorrent client again for uploading so others can download it?

Info on configuring your router for faster bittorrent downloading and uploading is at http://p2p.weblogsinc.com/entry/0401842428674831/

The qemu-knoppix 3.8 has been set to use to 1GB of your Windows system's RAM + swap file.
From the qemu-0.6.1-windows-2/qemu-knoppix.bat batch file, line 20:

start qemu.exe -L . -m 1024 -boot d -cdrom %BOOTDRIVE%/qemu-0.6.1-windows-2/bootcd.iso -hda %BOOTDRIVE% -hdachs 14070,16,63 -user-net -enable-audio -localtime
That argument in bold is the amount of RAM (physical RAM and if necessary swap file) that it is going to use. In my opinion, it is set WAY too high. It should be set to something realistic such as 256MB or 384MB. You can either use a ISO editor/creator program & extract the qemu-knoppix-3.8's contents, edit the batch file, and recreate the ISO file. Or you can hexedit the ISO file & change '-m 1024' to '-m 256'.

The setup chris-uk provides enough RAM for video purposes. (to allow un-compressed video or large compressed files to play in ram)

Perhaps that is the reason for such a large provision.

Can I copy the contents to the hard drive and edit and run from there?
Or do I have to do it from the CD?

Or, *shudder*, do I have to reboot my main box (AMD64 3000, 1GB, etc)to Windows XP,

All I want to do is see it in action :-)

The '1024M' was on the principle that it will be faster for Windows to write/read things from 'paging' disk, rather than re-read it from CD. You can set it as you wish.

You can just copy all the files off the CD to a directory, make your changes, and run them from disk; no problem. Or write them back to a new CD; that CD will 'autorun' but will not boot 'real'.

Information here http://www.ofset.org:8080/freeduc-doc/11 if you want to know what was done, how the script works, how to rebuild one so that it will boot 'real' as well as 'virtual', etc.

I've had success with WIndowsXP, failure with Windows95, failure with WIndowsME. I suspect it's something to do with the level of Windows that QEMU was built for; but I don't know. 'I have to upgrade to WIndowsXP so that I can run Linux' has got to be the lamest excuse ever, though :-)
This kernel was built with HZ=1000 . If someone is able to rebuild with HZ=100 (the kernel needs to go inside the 'bootcd.iso' file to be picked up by the virtual boot) it should run better; http://www.ofset.org:8080/freeduc-doc/11 tells you how to rebuild the bootcd.iso

The '1024M' was on the principle that it will be faster for Windows to write/read things from 'paging' disk, rather than re-read it from CD. You can set it as you wish.

It seems that Windows or QEMU doesn't like this for systems that don't have enough physical RAM. I only have 512MB on my Win2k box and the batch file would not work, QEMU would just start and quit right away. When I copied the batch file to my HD and changed -m 1024 to -m 256 and relaunched qemu-knoppix.bat, it worked fine.

On my P4 1.5GHz machine, it is running quite slow. Is this because I only gave QEMU 256MB to use, or just that my processor is too slow for this kind of emulation?

PS: Great idea though, thanks for adding it.

chris-ukl
03-17-2005, 05:33 PM
The real 'problem' is that Linux 2.6 kernels are set up to take 1000 timer-tick interrupts per second; and handling this in emulation takes a lot out of even a fast modern processor. If you try with a 2.4 kernel one ... there are some at http://home.btconnect.com/chrisandcarolyn/torrents/, I'm seeding the DVD at the moment which will work fine, or you could try 'Knoppix 3.7 for Windows' which is set up with the 2.4 kernel.
'Kanotix for Windows' works reasonably, too, despite a '2.6' kernel; possibly because it is built with 80586 opcodes, and fewer (but more complex) opcodes seems to mean faster emulation. And the OFSET Linuxes, with their lighter-weight window manager, are also good candidates. I'll seed them again when the DVD completes; looking like late tomorrow. Connect to any torrents you want and it will get done eventually, or look at http://www.ofset.org:8080/freeduc-doc/11 and learn how to assemble the piece-parts yourself. No source code required ! And you have a working example to check things against.

It should be possible to compile the kernel with HZ=100, and get good emulated performance for everything. Let me know if you manage it. You have to rebuild the 'bootcd.iso' to get it to use the changed kernel. I rather suspect 'high performance in emulation under Windows' is not uppermost on Linus' list of desired features :-)

Of course, you could always wait for next year's 6GHz machines which are rumoured to be needed to run Longhorn !

its good that there donating bandwidth and its cool that even a site with win in its domain is hosting it. but i do not take kindly to sites that use popups. one day its popups next day its browser exploits forceing dialers onto your computer. i dont mind sites using small adverts thats perfectly moral in my eyes, but popups is where i draw the lines. i wouldnt feel moral if i was to put popups in any of my sites.

Here is an interesting performance comparison of Knoppix 3.7 vs 3.8.

On a laptop with a Mobile Celeron 1.8GHz CPU running mprime (GIMPS distributed project (http://www.mersenne.org/), I am seeing a big performance difference.

I wonder if this is a change in the Linux kernel itself or in some Knoppix software such as power management?

Using Knoppix 3.8 I get 0.083 seconds per iteration.

Using Knoppix 3.7 with the 2.4 kernel I get 0.073 seconds per iteration, which is a huge difference.
If I use Knoppix 3.7 with the 2.6 kernel I get 0.080 seconds.

Any idea what might be causing this slowdown and how I might go about changing it? By defaul mprime runs with nice 19, but even if I change the priority back down to 0, the speed remains the same. I am not doing anything else on the laptop in either case.

A bit more info. Trying this out on a P4 3.0Ghz desktop machine, there is a much smaller difference between Knoppix using the 2.4 and 2.6 kernel. About 0.001 seconds per iteration difference, so I'm wondering if this has more to do with the power management/CPU throttling support in Knoppix 3.8? Any clues?

Someone couldn't run the thing because their CD drive was not found by the sequence at the beginning of the qemu*\*.bat file. If that's the problem, copy the CD (as files) to a directory, fix the bat file so it will find your CD player, burn it to a new CD, and try again.

Others have not had things working because 'qemu' could not get hold of 1GB of memory (real + paging space). If this might be the problem, either 'up' the paging space on your system, or change the '-m 1024' in the bat file to something lower and try again.

You can run the thing from disk; the CD is just for effect. Put the files in the right place and then a command like 'subst f: c:\knoppix-cd-files\' will (surprisingly) do the job.

The various 'bat' files are set to close windows when they terminate; if you edit them to take out any 'echo off' commands and 'exit' commands, and change the 'start qemu' to just 'qemu', then any error messages you get should be left on the screen. Post them here and people will try to crack the problem.

Failing that, you can always get the source for everything and start putting in 'printf' statements :-)

General question regarding Unionfs in Cebit v3.8.

What format is utilized in the Unionfs program material placed in ramdisc?

Will Unionfs perform correctly if the Knoppix CD is mounted TORAM?

What are the performance limits in KnoppixCD as regards the size of Unionfs downloads?

Can downloads be made from other distros?

Can the unionfs data be written to HDD directly through mount of HDD (especially in TORAM mode)?

Is there a tutorial which addresses how to use unionfs?

I answer your questions to the best of my ability but please note that I am learning about unionfs the same way everyone else is by experiementing & reading.

>What format is utilized in the Unionfs program material placed in ramdisc?
I gather this question is asking if the files are compressed like a cloop or squashfs. As far as I can tell, they are not compressed. You probably already know this, UnionFS is just the *logical* mounting of filesystems on top of another filesystem. UnionFS is special because it allows for fine grained transparency so that the system and use the filesystem on top but can still access the filesystem underneath.

>Will Unionfs perform correctly if the Knoppix CD is mounted TORAM?
I have no idea. I have 1 PC that has a 1GB of RAM & maybe I will try it tomorrow.

>What are the performance limits in KnoppixCD as regards the size of Unionfs downloads?
Again no idea. I figure someone can test this by simply downloading things like .tar.gz, .deb, mp3, jpg files until the ramspace fills up. What happens then? Is the system unable to open a new program without resorting to use swap space? I have no idea until I test it.

>Can downloads be made from other distros?
I do not understand this question. Please elaborate.

>Can the unionfs data be written to HDD directly through mount of HDD (especially in TORAM mode)?
Probably yes. But I guess that it would have to be done manually. As far as I can recall, the UnionFS mount takes a portion of the system's RAM and mounts it writeable on top of the knoppix CD's /. Thus /ramdisk holds changes to /. To store the changed filesystem, it should be as simple as mounting a usable HD partition & then cp or rsync /ramdisk to that partition.

> Is there a tutorial which addresses how to use unionfs?
To my knowledge, there is no simple tutorial or howto for unionfs + knoppix. Sources for info are Linux Journal article on UnionFS, the official UnionFS homepage at SUNY StonyBrook sunysb.edu, the Knoppix developer mailing list, the knoppix derived distro Helix had a working UnionFS implementation public about 2 weeks before Knoppix 3.8, and of course the here at these forums.

On a separate note, I have noticed that you have posted these questions (or similar ones) before, both here at the forums and also on Kyle Rakin's Knoppix 3.8 article. It is most likely that everyone else is just begining to learn about unionfs. If you have additional unionfs + knoppix questions still unanswered you should either contact Klaus Knopper or Fabian Franz (Knoppix devels) or perhaps contact the UnionFS researchers.

underscore;

Please accept my congrats for attempting to answer the queries I made.

I note that you have researched the same areas I have visited.

I have assumed the Unionfs material obtained by apt-get install would be uncompressed since that is the normal Debian system. perhaps the result can then be compressed?

In regards the use of Unionfs, I find two descriptions of the use: mount -t unionfs -o dir=/dir0ne:/dirtwo none /combined is one such...

The other which performs with Knoppix is:

su apt-get-update Edit: s/b apt-get update
su apt-get-install (pkg name) Edit s/b apt-get install (etc.

I assume I could run many pkgs with the above statement in root, as many as the ramdisc will accept plus the additional in swap space.

I would expect that the minirt.gz may have to be modified to accept GB sized pkgs list since it is limited in Knoppix CD to 800MB.

Thus if one used the CD burned to a DVD and suitably modified minirt.gz , a large Unionfs download seems possible.

Transferring the large GB sized Unionfs data to HDD would then give the data for compressing the result and generating a KNOPPIX/KNOPPIX file.

The downloading would have to be in stages in order to provide the ~9GB of programs uncompressed which translate to a 4.4GB full-capacity DVD disc.

The whole purpose here is to test the "split" .iso procedure outlined in Knoppix DVD forum which permits the DVD to be fully utilized by employing mapping technique for the KNOPPIX/KNOPPIX.iso and the standard isolinux .iso for the boot portion.

I have 3GB of ram and 2GB of swap to utilize so I would need a couple of loads into Unionfs to obtain the programs.

I have no experience with downloads from Debian and wouldn't know if a given program was included as valid for the 3.8Knoppix Cebit CD kernel 2.6.11.

Asking may get you knowwhere>>>>>>>>>

General results with UnionFS.

I downloaded ~100MB of applications via -apt-get as follows;

apt-get update

apt-get install (enlightenment,amarok,cinepaint,digikam,festival,g eomview,kweather)

Each app was installed separately.

My RAM at the time was 1GB. The system guard indicated around 719MB in use.

I then installed another 1GB of ram after shutdown.

I attempted to run the CD in toram mode. I received an error message stating that required ram was 2085169K and that I had only 2075112K of ram. It did not load toram. EDIT: This was caused by using a "split".iso DVD+RW disc which created a break in the TORAM loading scripts. The TORAM mode performs well in a normal Knoppix3.8 CD burn. I forgot I was using the "split" version....NEVER MIND!

I then installed 3GB of ram which enabled the loading toram. However, an error occurred in KDEinit which did not initiate the desktop. The error message stated that I was in need of 82MB of ram or some such. EDIT: Again, this occurred with the "split" format of Knoppix3.8.

The strange behavior in loading toram doesn't make much sense. EDIT: Now it does!!

Has anyone a clue to the reason for this? Bad ram? EDIT: Mebbe not!

Evidence provided by the exercises I described indicates the Unionfs might well download into Knoppix3.8CD boots up to 2+GB of apps with a 3GB ram system.

Many of the apps need be obtained from other than Debian sources.

EDIT: If one has many GB's of swap in addition, you can "choke" on the added apps!!!!!

It seems apparent that regardless of the ram size, Unionfs allows swap use.

Provide a big swap file and you get a big download capability.

Hello! Thank you for making the Win-bootable version of Knoppix 3.8! Do you have the MD5 sum for the Knoppix iso? When I downloaded from torrent, all there was was the ISO itself. This is directed at chris_uk who made the QEMU version, but anyone who has the MD5 (and is *sure* that it comes directly from the original) is welcome to post it. Thx.

...Do you have the MD5 sum for the Knoppix iso? .....
The "unauthorized" torent people have unfortunately not been posting one. The good news is that Bittorrent itself does a lot of file checking of what it downloads, and it never tries to translate new lines to CR/LF pairs, so you are much more likely to have a good copy of the ISO when you download by Bittorent than when you get it from the mirrors. That said, I applaud your effort to check the md5 sum. I believe that I have the ISO that you are interested in. Since there was no md5 posted I have created one myself. Note that my CD works but that I don't have the tons of memory needed for the running under windows option, so I can not confirm that that part works. here's what I got when I calculated the MD5 sum:
-------------
# MD5 checksums generated by MD5summer (http://www.md5summer.org)

I've put a Knoppix 3.8, modified so it will also run under Windows, in amongst my other torrents at http://home.btconnect.com/chrisandcarolyn/torrents/. It is set up for US English by default.
Looks like this if you 'autorun' it

Normal Knoppix if you boot it.

There's some problem with the seed. I could only download 99.6% of it.
Please advise...

Okey, I am new to all of this and im not sure what I should do. I did not read all of the forum but i have a question. I have downloaded the ISO image and burned it to cd and booted it and loaded everything. The only problem is everything is in a different language and i have no clue how to change it.

Romulis;

!the boot prompt, type lang=us.

Since the keyboard in German is laid out differently, you will find the = sign as ..shift 0 ...

The y is z on your keyboaard. ( You can search the keybd at boot to find the characters)

Boot is ...knoppix

lilsirecho

My advice is to skip that encription...cancel it out.

It is not mandatory to have it and with a LiveCD it shouldn't be necessary....

Romulis
03-28-2005, 09:02 PM
lilsirecho,

I know it is not mandatory, but what does that encription do in this case.

\
Also i wanted to know if there is a way to save the information from the program to my hard drive, I thought that is what that encription does.

lilsirecho
03-28-2005, 09:27 PM
Encription is not necessary to save your home and config. It prevents others from using your data by encripting it with the AES encription system.

I have never used encription and never will.

You would save everything you need to save with no encription and boot to persistent home without encripting.

I have no further comment.

BitTorrent does 'sha1' checking internally. If it says that you have a 100% download, then it's right.
(You can make it check again by re-downloading the torrent file from http://home.btconnect.com/chrisandcarolyn/torrents/ ; I promise you that's the one I put there; and re-running your torrent client)

Yes, all you get is an '.iso' . It is the original ISO, with a few files added (look in the qemu* directory) so that it carries its PC emulator, virtual BIOS, and virtual graphics adapter along with it so that it can 'autorun' under Windows. If you have an original CeBIT CD, you can use a file comparison tool ('diff' would work, after a fashion) to check what the changes are.

The tracker did a self-denial-of-service ... so many seeds all trying to contact it every 5 minutes used up all its bandwidth ... for a while. It should be back now.

i'd like to find or create some bootfloppies for knoppix 3.8 because i'd like to use it as a Xserver on an old laptop (p166,8MBram,800x600,ethernet...)
it's not my laptop so i can't write on the disc so i have to use a live cd
but it has not the capability to boot on cd
it was booting corectely with the 3.7 with floppiesdisc but in this distributions, i can't write on files las in the 3.8(for changing the config files of the X server) so i need knoppix 3.8
(the cd rom dont't even support rw cd lol)

The real 'problem' is that Linux 2.6 kernels are set up to take 1000 timer-tick interrupts per second; and handling this in emulation takes a lot out of even a fast modern processor. If you try with a 2.4 kernel one ... there are some at http://home.btconnect.com/chrisandcarolyn/torrents/, I'm seeding the DVD at the moment which will work fine, or you could try 'Knoppix 3.7 for Windows' which is set up with the 2.4 kernel.

That doesn't seem to be the problem. I tried QEMU with Knoppix 3.7 booting with the 2.4 kernel and it was about the same speed as using the 2.6 kernel. I then tried it in a P4 2.8 GHz machine and it was almost just as slow as my P4 1.4 GHz machine using the 2.4 kernel. The 2.8 GHz P4 has 1GB of RAM, but when I try using 512MB with QEMU, it crashes. It will work with 384MB of RAM but doesn't seem to run any faster than with 256MB of RAM.

What kind of system are you running QEMU on? Knoppix wether with 2.4 kernel or 2.6 kernel runs unusably slow on both of my systems. I take it that it runs reasonably fast for you?

Recommended reading: There's a text file called "knoppix-cheatcodes.txt" both on the Knoppix CD itself, and on all the download mirrors (here, for example (ftp://ftp.uni-kl.de/pub/linux/knoppix/knoppix-cheatcodes.txt)). Among other things, it will tell you how to change the keyboard layout from "de" (German) to "us" (American) and how to change the default language from "de" to "us". It even tells you how to type "=" using a German keyboard layout.

I'd rather wait till then than use the CBit iso image to see if it includes kde 3.4.

To get KDE 3.4 at this point, you either have to build it or use the development debs which are not quite complete and not built from a release candidate version of 3.4. That;s why you won't see it in the initail official release of Knoppix 3.8.

But its fine to demo it from some of the cebit remasters that are surfacing.....

I've tested Knoppix 3.8.1 and it's absolutely INCREDIBLE!. I've compiled and installed a new program (mplayer), modified KDE preferences and various apps options, added a new background...and only creating a persistent home directory and saving preferences in a 128 mb USB disk, when you reboot it detects ALL automatically! It's like having my own computer in a CD+USB drive everywhere! (That remembers me...I've to buy an 1 GB USB drive :D)

Thx for this FANTASTIC distro, and keep up the good work!

Does this version have support for NTFS filesystem? Somehow it seems to me that captive is not included in this version. Could anyone verify this? If there is not NTFS write support, is it enough to apt-get captive-installer-knoppix and captive-ntfs-knoppix?

Thanks

Does this version have support for NTFS filesystem?

Yes, but apparetnly creating files on NTFS is still dangerous, so, as before, it's pretty much read-only support.

Somehow it seems to me that captive is not included in this version. Could anyone verify this?

True, captive is not included. ("dpkg -l 'captive*' " indicates no captive packages are installed.)

If there is not NTFS write support, is it enough to apt-get captive-installer-knoppix and captive-ntfs-knoppix?

No. The kernel is apparently not patched to support the LUFS module and there is no installation candidate available for any captive package (despite the dpkg output).

Try Kanotix (http://www.kanotix.com) instead, it's got captive installed. Or, an alternative is to install the captive package (http://www.jankratochvil.net/project/captive/dist/captive-static-1.1.5.tar.gz) manually and use the "captive-cmdline" program

Thanks

I do have firewire and I do have a Plextor PX-708UF connected to it, which Knoopx 3.8.1 finds properly. so I assume that something else called for the modprobe that failed.

Probably caused by the sound card. This may sound strange but it worked for me. I was getting that same error until I hit my mute key on my laptop while I booted up. I don't get the error if I do that everytime. Might want to give it a shot.
