I've only been using Linux for a couple weeks but have known about it for years. But one thing I always wondered.

Why is the mascot a penguin?

Is it Linus' favorite animal or something?

I think the penguin is perfect. Thanks for the link UnderScore.

Maybe the chameleon, but that's too cliche. Tux is nice and original, like Linux!

Most simply, LT likes penguines a lot. An eagle was promoted at one time but TUX won out as LT's preference. ( [T]ovalds [U]ni[X] ).

www.kerneltraffic.org have likely got the old mails stashed away somewhere.

well... the penguin is still great... i have a picture of it as one of those people who sell those cheap watches on the streets... its a funny picture... :D
