Cannot write to / in any way

after trying to install ati driver I've noticed that I cannot write to existing directories even if the permissions allow it, is this something Knoppix is doing by design?

if you are on a plain Knoppix desktop, you might have permissions to your hdd, but the drive is open 'read-only'

the next tab over from the permissions tab, shows the Device with a check box under the drop box
