sound trouble

i need help getting my cound to work.
im running knoppix 3.6 i get error at start up and sound config doesnt want to run. says the kernel doesnt have module sound, but soundcore.o is in the right folder.
let me know what info i can cut and paste for you to help me. (include commands)
