SOUND WORKS USING command "sudo alsaconf" from terminal
i got this from http://lists.debian.org/debian-laptop/2004/11/msg00182.html

alsaconf ran a script and that was all.... :D

don't how i missed it but to all others make sure you run "sudo alsaconf"

This is a little late, but just open a terminal. Enter sudo alsaconf at the command prompt and whatever it asks, tell it "OK" When alsaconf is done, run alsamix from the command prompt to set volume levels (or you can run kmix the same way).
