View Full Version : How to add apps in re-master from other OS'es?

Apt-get is provided for Debian apps.

In re-mastering with other OS apps, what re-mastering steps are required?

The installs are made in Chroot environment so KDEPACKAGE is not useable(needs X).

Perhaps someone has an answer.

Asking may get you knowwhere.

what exactly do you mean?
something gnu not among the more than 8000 available in apt repositories or??
or are you talking about a windows, OS2, macOS app?

A list appears below which apt-get does not install:

crystalspace-doc
dcmtk-doc
tomcat4-web
fop-doc
amaya
ac12
amd-64-libs
emacs20 mozart-doc-html
nada-reference
argoumi-doc
gandalf-doc
ldapter
pike 7.6-reference
Opera

None of the above load with apt-get install.

They do appear in KPACKAGE listing made prior to re-master procedure.

I assume they are not native Debian therefore.

they are available in apt, hmm, some are non free, like Opera. what is in your apt sources list?

I am not a Debian aware user but have interest in testing a procedure for increasing the DVD media utilization beyond the 2GB file limit.

To do this requires approximately 3.5GB of apps so I selected large- sized apps at random not realizing they may not be installable.

None of the listed apps would install with apt-get install.

Googling says KPACKAGE can be used to derive packages to install from other sources. It did not respond while in chroot mode.

I do not know.....apt sources list... that you mention.

Thank you for your response. It seems strange that packages should be listed that the user cannot download!!!

This does seem to get more complex as I delve into it...

apt uses /etc/apt/sources.list, a plain textfile, that tells apt where too look for new programs.
you may have to add a few extra depositories to be able to install some of those files...
could you post what you have in that file curently?

OErjan;
The list is reproduced below:
==============================# /etc/apt/sources.list for Knoppix
# If you want to do a "full upgrade", you should first
# upgrade the Packages from Debian/unstable (KDE & Co.)
# before doing a (dist-)upgrade for Debian/testing.
#
# See sources.list(5) for more information, especialy
# Remember that you can only use http, ftp or file URIs
# CDROMs are managed through the apt-cdrom tool.

Its easy enough to remaster in graphical mode. Boot the CD with a cheatcode to runlevel 2. Move /etc/skel to /home/knoppix in the chrooted remaster filesystem. Chown -R /home/knoppix to knoppix:knoppix. Create a /home/knoppix/.xinitrc file with contents:

startkde

Then:
su knoppix
startx

When done move home/knoppix/bacxk to /etc/skel and chown -R etc/skel back to root:root

arkaine23;

Mitey fine to hear from you on this subject. I have googled a bit or two about the graphical mode remaster but haven't attempted but just the method described by Sunnijl which employs KDE procedures but chroots to /mnt/hda3/KNOPPIX (the KNOPPIX/KNOPPIX file).

I was successful in re-mastering KNOPPIX v3.8 Cebit to 748MB size and used a "SPLIT" .iso procedure to generate a DVD burn. Modified the isolinux.cfg to permit automatic boot-up to persistent home config.

The "SPLIT" .iso method employs a "prefix.iso" which is concatenated with a "suffix.iso". The prefix.iso is essentially everything but the /KNOPPIX/KNOPPIX derived from the KNOPPIX v3.8 .iso. The suffix.iso is generated by the re-master procedure operated on the KNOPPIX/KNOPPIX file. Mkisofs is applied to generate the compressed fs and again mkisofs is applied to generate a full .iso after inserting the modified KNOPPIX/KNOPPIX file into a copy of the CDROM (KNOPPIX V 3.8). The resultant .iso is loop-mounted and the prefix.iso and suffix.iso are concatenated to produce the final re-mastered .iso.

I am not certain whether your method will permit the "SPLIT" mode to be employed.

The full purpose of doing all this is to test the proposition that the "SPLIT" procedure will permit the loading of a DVD disc to full capacity rather than be limited to 2GB as is the case with isolinux.iso generators.

To test the proposition I would be satisfied if I could randomly load large-sized applications totaling 3.6GB. This would make the total 4.4GB.

It seems my attempts to load random apps from the KPACKAGE listings produced no loadable apps in apt-get install. I selected apps which had no conflicts and most were 20MB or more.

I probably need more smarts about debian access than I have at present.

I expect it will take around 300 apps to get to 3.5GB if the data listed for the apps is compressed file size. If it is not, then I will need 6-8GB of apps!!!

As you can plainly see, I am not a Debian user except to try this "SPLIT" thing and probably try it on other LiveCD's as well.

I hope this description makes sense to you. The listing of /etc/apt/sources was made from my "SPLIT" .iso of KNOPPIX V 3.8 DVD (748mb).

The DVD illustrates that the "SPLIT" works but is no guarantee it will carry out to 4.4GB since it can go to 2GB under normal conditions.

It seems that loading 3.0+ apps in Debian can be a resl pain!!

After further inspection, it is obvious that the downloaded programs are installed without compression.

This means that the total of downloaded material is near 9GB with the limit of 4.4GB in compressed mode.

Examining the listing of files for KNOPPIX DVD 3.5( there are ~2GB of compressed files on the DVD) shows 2660 apps listed.

It seems therefore I must load somewhere in the vicinity of 2600 apps to reach a total exceeding the 2GB limit with room to spare.

For this test, the actual app isn't the important factor but the total size is.

why do you not include a few short films and some music on that disk... or even create a "empty" file with dd?

OErjan;

I have thought about that and wondered what happens to a Divx file when compressed again? Will it be rejected by the cloop?

I have two one Gig divx files I could use but I have no idea how to load them as well.

Perhaps it is a good solution.

Please advise.

OErjan; Pressing on , I generated multiple copies of a 1GB video file (each copy with rename) into the /KNOPPIX/home directory.

The /KNOPPIX directory shows 8.9GB present.

Running mkisofs -R -U -V...etc into NEWCD (with CD data from CDRom) to generate compressed fs, I get a repeating error at block 51230.

The normal size of the DVD I generated for V3.8 KNOPPIX is 33394 blocks.

What is limiting me to 51320? Size limit in /home? Compressed fs limit? Can't use same 1GB video even with rename?
