Hallo,

wie kann man unter knoppix 3.8.1 einstellen wieviel speicher für die ramdisk reserviert wird?
bzw. kann man die ramdisk nachträglich verkleinern?

in english:
how can i change the size of the ramdisk?

But why do you want to use less memory? The more, the better.

Problem ist ob ramdisk zu klein ist, nich zu gross :-)

Because I need the memory for the programs!
If the ramdisk takes to much memory, it is not possible to start big applications like kde and so :-(

Why is the size of the ramdisk calculated dynamicly?
Trying to use knoppix 3.8.1 on a computer with 1GB Ram and getting problems with not enough memory.

Here http://www.knoppix.net/wiki/General_FAQ#Q:_What_are_the_minimum_system_require ments.3F
you can see minimum system requirements for normal work. It seems to me, that you must have more memory for more programs, it is not posible to "squeeze" memory. There was a possibillity to make a temporary swap file on hdd in the early days of Knoppix, don't know if it is possible today.

I think it should be possible to run knoppix 3.8.1 on a PC with 1GB without a swap file!
And why should I make a swap file only because the ramdisk is eating my memory for nothing?
Yes I know the cheatcode for copying all rom the cd to the ramdisk needs a ramdisk with more then 1GB, but it should be possible to
say that the ramdisk is only 512MB.

This is very strange. I work without problems with only 128MB memory until recently and now I have 256MB. Maybe this can help you: http://www.knoppix.net/wiki/Cheat_Codes
"mem=128M
Specify Memory size in MByte, Some Boards apparently don't pass the proper memory size to the linux-kernel. It may cause the message "Panic cannot mount root file system" and the system hangs. Use "knoppix mem=128M" to solve that problem if your system has 128MByte memory for example (caution you MUST use a capital "M" here). Stuff like mem=16320K also works."
