Hello all,

I have downloaded Knoppix 3.2 from 4-10-03 and burned to CD and ran successfully on my desktop. However, on my laptop (Compaq 906us) it will simply not run.

I first tried letting in boot with no cheat codes. It takes 15-20mins to make it to the point of loading the USB handler, it then goes into an infinite loop reading out garbage about atapi, scsi, and all kinds of verbose junk about "Strange, DHQ...."

I then tried every combination of no{mce|....} codes, including all of them. Each code allows my laptop to get to the infinite loop faster, but never past the infinite loop.

Please help me figure this out. If you all need more detailed errors, please tell me if there is a way to stop the loop so I can actually read the error messages, they scroll across the screen so fast its hard to read.

Thanks for your help,

genxian316

Did you see the post about Compaq laptops not too far below this one by Dave Bechtel?

...on my laptop (Compaq 906us) it will simply not run.

I checked -- this laptop uses the ATI 3x0 IGP chipset and won't run Knoppix very well, if at all (why call it Radeon if it ain't?). This is not the fault of Linux or Knoppix; it's one of the reasons I'll never buy ATI if I can avoid it. Contrast with nVidia -- not perfect yet, but at least trying!

<Bunk2000> insmod char-major-4 failed
<Bunk2000> it failed 3 times
<Bunk2000> cannot read ELF header from lib/modules/2.4.20-xfs/kernal/drivers/char/serial.o
<Bunk2000> now its continuing, line 557: .bun.loadkeys: Input/output error
<Bunk2000> line 631: /usr/sbun/mkxf86config: i/o error
<Bunk2000> ok now its trying to scan for hard-disk partitions and creating /etc/fstab
<Bunk2000> ...
<Bunk2000> man this is slow
<Bunk2000> on my desktop it takes just a couple mins to boot
<Bunk2000> ok finally done making /etc/fstab
<Bunk2000> anybody else had problems like these?
<Bunk2000> ok screen just went blank
<Bunk2000> ok got the screen back, more i/o errors
<Bunk2000> so i have like 6 /etc/rcS.d/S00knoppix-autoconfig errors now
<Bunk2000> ok here is the infinite loop guys
<Bunk2000> it says ide-scsi: Strange, packet command initiated yet DRQ isnt asserted
<Bunk2000> hdc: status error:status=0x20 {DeviceFault}
<Bunk2000> scsi0 channel 0 : resetting for retry
<Bunk2000> ok so you guys have any other ideas of how to get knoppix to boot on this laptop

I have the same problem with my Presario, but can't find a post with a solution. Is there one?

The short answer (as I stated in an earlier post in this thread) is no. The long-term answer is unknown. Until HPaq acknowledges the probem and/or ATI comes up with a suitable IGP320/340 driver for Linux, you are out of luck. I would recommend that all concerned contact both ATI and HPaq with their problems -- this is unacceptable behavior from a major manufacturer, especially one with a public stance of being gung-ho on Linux!

--Sounds like you have a bad CD burn. DL the latest version and try again.

--Even if you have a crappy video card, if you run with cheatcodes ' fb1024x768 xserver=svga ' it SHOULD work. This is just running with a framebuffer and telling XFree86 to use the generic SVGA server instead of optimizing for a one-off chipset.
