Ok, I am still new to Linux, so be easy on me.

I installed the latest version of Knoppix to my hard drive (Debian installation). The computer can boot off of a cd/dvd just fine. But if I use the version I installed, it does not recognize the drive. The drive is set on the secondary IDE controller by itself. It is a Lite-On 812s DVD RW.

I went and modified /etc/fstab DVD setting from ISO9600 to AUTO (not bad for a former Windows guy) and still did not recognize either a dvd or cd. I even inserted the Knoppix cd, and the system will not see it.

Can you guys help me out?

ide-cd: passing drive hdc to ide-scsi emulation.

The system sees the DVD drive on IDE1 (hdc).

How can I configure this to recognize the DVD/CD drive?
Do I need to do this in fstab?

what version are you using?
By means of the #knoppix irc channel, I was informed that as of 3.8.1 scsi emulation is no longer needed, and in fact prevents drives from mounting.
To fix this problem I had to remove all the lines in the stanzas of /etc/lilo.conf that created scsi emulation, such as scsi=hda scsi=hdb etc.
This fixed the problem for me. Just remember to run 'lilo' after editing lilo.conf to commit the changes.
