when i did the initial install kde was chosen. using synaptic i downloaded gnome and it was installed. to my horror i watched kde being deleted (i know not why), and it was done before i could get it stopped. how do i get kde reloaded as an option? i have tried using synaptic again but have had no success.

IIRC currently with KDE3.1 and GNOME 2.2 there are some library confilicts so you have to choose one or the other.

Have you tried to edit your /etc/apt/sources.list and put an entry to KDE sources and then apt-get update and apt-get install kdebase then multimedia, etc...
The line for KDE 3.1.1 stable:
deb http://download.kde.org/stable/3.1.1/Debian stable main

This is true but you can improve upon the on the current situation a bit and get some gtk2 apps running.
