is knoppix supposed to run really slow if booted from a cd?

Knoppix does not run all that bad (IMHO) from a CD. Knoppix is "supposed" to run from the CD and does a good job of it.

Yes, hard drives are faster. But there are issues with "installing" Knoppix on a CD, which it was not designed to do. Some people do it anyway. In some cases it more or less works, but many people have a lot of problems.

Even better, you would learn a lot by reading through many of the existing posts in that forum rather than expecting peole to retype all of the information contained there.
