Hi, everybody! I am trying to boot from cd (v3.9) on a hp pavilion 520n with an old compaq presario 1425 monitor. I have tried various cheatcodes such as:
boot: knoppix screen=800x600 ->because this made v3.7 work on this computer.
boot: knoppix vsync=60 ->and 65
boot: knoppix xvrefresh=65
boot: knoppix vga=normal
boot: fb800x600
And various combinations of these codes.
It seems that no matter what I do, after the hardware check the KDE comes up like static on a television (somewhat, because there are colors and I guess I can make out a desktop background. When it is trying to boot to gui mode from hardware-check (text) mode it says:"Starting X11...." and it flashes a black screen. It proceeds to say "Retrying with Server Xfree86(vesa)..." and flashes a black screen, and if I use "boot: fb800x600" it will continue after those two previous messages and say "Retrying with Server Xfree86(fbdev)...", say it failed, and give me a shell prompt. I know it is a display problem, but I just can't seem to get it to boot right.
I have searched the forum and every answer I saw I had already tried. I am at a loss of ideas right now, so any help is appreciated (*any*) and THANK YOU for your time.

P.S.>I am having the same exact problem on this computer with v3.8.2, but v3.7 works fine if I use the cheatcode "knoppix screen=800x600".

P.S.S>If anyone knows a post that might help (I probably looked at it, but just tell me) please give me the link.

Dear Sir,
Yes, I too have the same problem and have tried the cheat codes. I learn that my computer is using the Intel 82815 video chipset. I will be searching a solution with you.
Perhaps I could try your 3.7 version? Thanks! Your friend, 45auto

I downloaded the v3.7 .iso file from this ftp server: ftp://ftp.cise.ufl.edu/pub/mirrors/knoppix/
I used iso_burn to burn the iso to the cd, but I have had trouble burning at slower speeds, so you may want to try other programs on this site: http://iso.snoekonline.com/iso.htm

I have very old black&white (!) monitor and it works in Linux, not sure - Knoppix 3.8 or Kanotix 2005-02, Mepis 2004-06. It is very strange your monitors don't work with screen=800x600 vsync=60.

i have the exact same problem. this problem never happened to me in knoppix versions prior to 3.8. i think it's a bug in the xserver, but it might also be an incompatibility problem with intel chipsets. i've noticed that in previous replies the intel chipset is a factor.

i've tried using the cheatcodes with three different monitors, two of which are new, but to no avail. and y doesnt anyone care to post a solution? i posted a reply right now in hopes of reviving this issue, since its a very frustrating problem with graphics in knoppix 3.9.

Just a couple of questions to clarify:
- are you able to boot into linux? That is, can you boot into a virtual terminal using boot: knoppix 3?
- can you boot into X11 by booting with boot: knoppix xmodule=vesa vga=normal 3 and then typing 'init 5'?
- have you tried cycling through the modes using Ctrl+Alt+-?
- can you get out of GUI mode by typing Ctrl+Alt+F2?

Answer rwcitek's question and then we'll be able to get some more ideas about what to do.

Does it work with first booting up and then doing "modprobe intel_agp" and "startx"?

i tried "knoppix 3" and "knoppix xmodule=vesa vga=normal 3" and "init 5" and Ctrl+Alt+- and Ctrl+Alt+F2, but I couldn't get a screen without static. looks like there are about two modes of static, and i can get out of GUI mode. When I tried "knoppix 3" it said I missed a mode. I could pick my screen mode then. (columns and something else) I can hear the woman's voice saying I'm logging in or whatever she says.

Unfortunately, I don't understand what you did and what the results were. Where you able to get to a text-mode virtual console by booting with boot: knoppix 3? If so, type "lspci" and post the result here. If not, what symptoms does your system have (e.g. blank screen, flickering)? BTW, if Knoppix asks about the video mode, press <Return> and then choose mode 0.

I guess I got the "text-mode virtual console" by booting with "knoppix 3". The next screen said, "undefined mode number", so I entered zero. It checked my computer and said, "INIT: Entering runlevel: 3
"root@tty1[/]#", so I typed, "lspci"; and it showed the following:

Excellent. Knoppix can boot. In the future, you can type boot: knoppix vga=0 3 to avoid Knoppix from asking you what video mode to use.

Four more questions:
- in text-mode, are yout able to switch between the 4 virtual consoles by pressing Ctrl-Alt-F1, Ctrl-Alt-F2, etc.? At each virtual console the prompt will change to root@tty1, root@tty2, etc.
- in text-mode, can you type 'cat /etc/sysconfig/knoppix' and post the results here?
- can you enter graphics mode by typing "init 5"?
- from graphics mode, can you switch back to a virtual terminal using any of the Ctrl-Alt-F{1,2,3,4} keystrokes? If yes, can you switch back to the graphics mode by pressing Ctrl-Alt-F5?

No, I cannot switch between the four virtual consoles by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1, Ctrl+Alt+F2, etc. Here are the results for "cat /etc/sysconfig/knoppix" (note: instead of colons, they are kind of sideways hyphens, stacked on top of each other.):

BACKGROUND="/cdrom/KNOPPIX/background.jpg"Yes, after I type "init 5", words come on the screen (something about X11), and the screen flashes before entering graphics mode. Yes, Ctrl+Alt+F1 will switch me back to text-mode. Is that a virtual terminal? I didn't reboot and try F2, 3 and four. Hitting Ctrl+Alt+5 cleared the screen except for a cursor at the top left, but I couldn't seem to do anything; so I rebooted in Windows to post these results.

Thanks,
Kenneth

No, I cannot switch between the four virtual consoles by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1, Ctrl+Alt+F2, etc.
Are you sure you cannot switch virtual consoles? Everything else you have written suggests that you should be able to. Here are some steps to try:
- boot with boot: knoppix vga=0 3
- do you get a shell prompt that says "root@tty1[/]#"?
- if yes, then press Ctrl+Alt+F2. Does the prompt now say "root@tty2[/]#"?
- if yes, then press Ctrl+Alt+F3. Does the prompt now say "root@tty3[/]#"?
- if yes, then press Ctrl+Alt+F4. Does the prompt now say "root@tty4[/]#"?
- if yes, then press Ctrl+Alt+F1. Does the prompt now say "root@tty1[/]#"?

If you answered "no" to any of the above questions, please describe what changed, if anything, when you pressed the Ctrl+Alt+F{1,2,3,4} key combination.

Yes, unfortunately, I'm sure that I can't switch virtual consoles. I tried it, again, and nothing happened. After trying Ctrl+Alt+F2, I tried F3, four and five, but it was like I didn't press anything; yet when I pressed F1 through F5 by themselves, I got letters of the alphabet. I also tried Ctrl+F2, Ctrl+F3, Alt+F2, Alt+F3, etc. Nothing happened.
Thanks,
Kenneth

OK. Let's try one more item then:
- boot with boot: knoppix vga=0 3
- at the root shell, type 'ps fax' and post the result here.

You should see something like this:

This was all that I could see:

2232 tty4 Ss+ 0:00 /bin/bash -login
...
And there are your virtual terminals, tty1 through tty4. I have no idea why you cannot cycle between them using Ctrl+Alt+{function key}. I would recommend that you find a Linux Users Group in your area where people can give you in-person assistance.
