Ok i did apt-get dist-upgrade and it unistalled my kde but i went back and installed it and installed gnome. Now when i start up on login it doesnt see kde or gnome what can i do to start up into it because it only starts up into windowmaker now.....

Did your login screen change? If so I would suggest apt-getting kdm, and maybe removing xdm.

And, are you sure you have all KDE packages? AFAIK Gnome and KDE bite eachother in Debian, the one is compiled with gcc 3.1, the other with 2.9. Library headers changed between these two versions.

--With knoppix, I recommend *against* doing dist-upgrade. Just do ' apt-get update; apt-get upgrade '. If you can't get things working, your system is probably hosed to the point where you should just backup critical files and reinstall.
