shpchp error

Whenever Knoppix (on hard drive) boots, I get a series of errors telling me it can't load shpchp because that is missing. It gets past the errors, and most stuff seems to work (apart from sound, file management, and a few othe esoteric things). I would like to stop it trying to load shpchp, to see if that will help with the other illnesses. Does anyone know where is the instruction to load shpchp, and can I turn that off?
