View Full Version : Can't edit /etc/resolvconf

I am setting up a small network. On my other PC I edit /etc/resolv.conf, (to make nameserver same as gateway PC with modem) but knoppix 3.7 doesn't have this file. I attempted to view /etc/resolvconf instead, to see if nameserver is there, but get told "not an ordinary file". How do I get to edit this? Or do I change nameserver in another place?

Thanks

What version of Knoppix are you running? Are you running from CD or has it been installed to the hard drive?
do a:
ls -l /etc/res*
and post the output here.

How strange, I couldn't find /etc/resolv.conf using mc yesterday, but toady it is there.

Anway - knoppix 3.7 installed to HD.

ls -l /etc/res*
/etc/resolv.conf (in a medium blue colour)
/etc/resolvconf:
. .. update-libc.d

cat /etc/resolv.conf
#insert namerservers here
#nameserver 127.0.0.1

I changed nameserver to 192.168.1.1 to match PC #2. I can ping 216.239.37.99, and ISP, but can't ping google.com or get to any website or use chat from knoppix. 192.168.1.1 is PC #1 with modem which has dnsmasq going.

Thanks
