Would it be possible to have knoppix on 3CDs?

And then you would swap them during usage.. or maybe in two cdrom drives.

Not quite sure how that would work but maybe someone already gave a thought or two to this matter.

as usual with these kind of things: Yes, it can be done, but it is going to be hard.

The "easy" way: use multiple cdrom drives, each one with it's own CD.
Only problem here is that you have to do quite a bit of customizing on knoppix and you'd have to use cramfs or something like that because cloop (what knoppix normally uses) can use only one device at a time. (But because it is opensource, you might also be able to add multiple-device-ability to cloop)

The Hard way: Use one cdrom drive with multiple cdroms. This is going to be a major pain in the ass to do. Because a lot of important files are only stored on the cdrom right now, you'd have to save them to RAM when swapping cdroms. Figuring out which files that are, and how to get them all to fit in 256 MB ram is going to be pretty... interresting...

.. and probably not so usefull. User would need to close all the applications from first cdrom and only then insert second one which would then include (for e.g.) another copy of whole kde and some additional apps.

The first sollutions seems doable.. but for the second one..

Thanks for suggestions, I will continoue research in this ways :)

may be a solution to your first proposition ..

would it be possible to use cloop on a standard data cd to quadruple the storage space on it? For things like videos and mp3s this could massively increase storage.....

you can't compress something that is already compressed .. well not more than a 1% or maybe 2% if you are lucky..

raw .txt files would be something else..
