system halt when start X

i used the knoppix on my laptop ( ibm thinkpad r31, shared memory for my i810 video card )
i don't know how to resolv this problem .

you didn't say which KNOPPIX build, some works some don't for my Dell which is also a i810 based system.

i have tried this option , but fail.
i can see X when i set mem=120M . because follow message in dmesg:

try expert mode and go into the x86config(you would be prompted), change the monitor value. The default 28-96 is too wide for my LCD with i810. I changed it to something like 28-57 and it works.
