Hi,
I have been using knoppix for a few days now and I am still having problems connecting my ADSL connection.
I use a Netcomm 1300 plus 4 modem (includes router). It is connected via ethernet.

In knoppix (the latest version) I run the ADSL/PPPoE config and its detects a connection on eth1. It asks for my username and password and then says type 'pon dsl-provider' to connect. I type 'pon dsl-provider' and it says 'Plugin rp-pppoe loaded' , is this correct?
After doing this the internet is still not connected for some reason as firefox and other internet applications fail to connect.
However I am able to connect to my modem in firefox by typing in 192.168.1.1 , so the modem is being detected ok.

Below is the results of ifconfig and netcardconfig

knoppix@2[knoppix]$ ifconfig

What is eth0? Maybe you can try "ifconfig eth0 down" or "ifconfig eth1 down" than again "ifconfig eth1 up". Combine this experiment with "poff" and "pon dsl-provider". I don't have experience with router, but any way, may be you will do netcardconfig and use DHCP option.

Hi,
I have been using knoppix for a few days now and I am still having problems connecting my ADSL connection.
I use a Netcomm 1300 plus 4 modem (includes router). It is connected via ethernet.

In knoppix (the latest version) I run the ADSL/PPPoE config and its detects a connection on eth1.
If you have a router, it should be taking care of all PPPoE stuff, including logging in. You shouldn't need (or want) PPPoE on any of your computers. Local computers just talk to the router, without PPPoE, the router does NAT and talks to the ISP.

When I fisrt installed a router about 5 1/2 years ago I noticed that the computer running Win98 would still run with the PPPoE software installed, which did strike me as strange, But I quickly removed it and have had no PPPoE on any of several systems here running Win98, XP or Linux (Debian and Knoppix). What happens if you just boot the CD and click on one of the links in
Konqueror? Doesn't it access the Internet just fine? (If you have Knoppix on a hard disk don't even tell me about it, just do the test with a CD, lots of networking things go wrog after a HD install of Lnoppix.)

Of course, the router has to be enabled and has to have your DSL user name and password to log in to the ISP.

After a bit of research I have found out that my ADSL company has me configered to connect in bridged mode. I am not sure what this means, but I know that it is different from routed.
I have tried in windows and linux to connect via the router, however it doesnt work :(
The only way I can connect in windows is by opening up a internet connection, specify broadband PPPoE and type in my username and password.
Is there any equivalent method in knoppix I can use?

It means the router is not being used. You should do one of two things, enable it in spite of what your service provider says, or get an inexpensive DSL/cable router and attach that to your modem. I simply believe high speed connections should always use a NAT firewall (even with Linux, and particularly with Windows), so I've never worked without one (went out and got my fisrt as soon as the DSL guy left, turned the computer back on with it attached and then removed the PPPoE stuff from Windows. No regrets.)

my ADSL company has me configered to connect in bridged mode. This is my situation + I have simple Ethernet modem, w/o router. Conection is a bit tricky, but - as you can see - possible.

Sometimes you must put nodhcp in boot/grub/menu.lst.

Finally internet is working!!!I am posting this from knoppix.

I used the rp-pppoe-3.5 program to set up the adsl connection. However it still didnt work. By searching through the rp-pppoe forum, I found a solution.
I had to change the default route by:

# route del default
#route add default gw your_isp_ip

After doing this it works fine.
I feel if I had just connected using the knoppix pppoe connection utillity, and changed the default route it would also work.

Thanks for ur replies.
