Hey guys ..
i need some help ..its all gone with pete tong with my hdd ..
i have an sata (200gig) and an pATA (just a normal ide) ((200 gig too)) drive ..
the sata one was my old .. and it was running fine untill i bought the pATA drive
....
i created a lvl 0 raid with both drives (plugged both onto the raid controller)
activated raid in the bios.
at this point the pc didnt boot from the sata drive anymore.
even the drive hadnt been recognized at boot up ...
well.. then i changed the sata drive from one sata connection to the other one on
the raid controller (i have 2 of em)
that didnt work either.
then i tried just a raid with only the pATA drive... (i plugged the sATA drive on
the onboard sata controller again) ... that didnt work either.
((dont ask me y i did it .. -.- ))
changing the sata connection didnt wor either ..
...
the partition table looked like this:
C: 5 GB
D: 25 GB
E: 60 GB
F: 5 GB
G: 100 GB
(all NTFS)
((all just on the SATA drive .... the pATA drive doesnt contain any datas))
Well.. atm i just take care about the C partition ...
(its normally a windoze pc but i wanna try to repair my system with knoppix)
problem is ::::
That i lost the partitiontable somehow (dunno how) ... and i dont know any
solution to recover my datas ..
I already successfully recovered a few files with a suckin windoze recovering
tool... but i cannot recover all my data with it ..
i created under knoppix a partition (sda1) about 5120 megabytes with a
ntfs flag (?!)

can I restore my boot table with gpart?

It sounds like you took a formatted drive containing data and expected to make it part of a raid array without reformatting anything or reloading any data. And I would guess that you didn't make good backups either.

In a nutshell, as you seem to be learning, that will not work. I wouldn't have expected an sata and and a older parallel IDE drive to work together in a raid zero array either. Generally you have to use similar drives for a stripped array, and I had never heard of a raid system that would let you use an SATA and an older IDE. I'm not 100% certain that you can't get away with it, I just don't expect it will work.

As to the ability to recover, it depends on how much dammage was done to partition tables and the like. If you just hooked it up and quickly found that things were bad without running any partituon software, I would expect the partituion tables to have changed at all. But then they would be right when you disabled raid, and that doesn't seem to be the case or you wouldn't be asking. Or maybe the partitions are fine, and the data on the partirtions is now scrambled, which seems more likely. In that case gpart will not help you at all (it fixes partition tables, not all of the contents of the partitions). You might be able to recover some files with the Live Linux CD Helix (http://www.e-fense.com/helix/), but you're going to have to do some work to get anything back.

what should I do now with Helix CD?
