Hi all,
This is my goal.
For school we have Windows XP and use Novell Client stuff to log into the network. We have a heap of restrictions and are forced to use only the select few microsoft programs that are installed. Now what i want to do is Cut down Knoppix and add a Novell Client program and possibley groupwise (for email). Then make it fit onto my 256mb USB stick and boot from it @ school (yes the computers have the bios set so they can boot from them)
The only packages i want is
KDE
Openoffice.org
Novell Client
Groupwise
Network Tools
WINE
+ a few other small tools.
Now i have followed the How To on Knoppix remastering.
The computer i'm using to remaster on is a VMWare Machine that has 512mb of ram and a 5gib hard drive + Suse 9.2 installed on another partition.
I've gotten up to the part of creating the Compessed KNOPPIX image and i type in the big long comand and this is what is returned:

Warning: creating filesystem that does not conform to ISO-9660.
Mkisofs: No such file or directory. Invalid node - -hide-rr-moved
Partial read (o bytes of 65536), padding with zeros.
[ 9] Block# 0 size 0 -> 84[compression ratio 100%, overall: 100%]

Statistics:
Gzip(0): 0 ( 0%)
Gzip(1): 0 ( 0%)
Gzip(2): 0 ( 0%)
Gzip(3): 0 ( 0%)
Gzip(4): 0 ( 0%)
Gzip(5): 0 ( 0%)
Gzip(6): 0 ( 0%)
Gzip(7): 0 ( 0%)
Gzip(8): 0 ( 0%)
Gzip(9): 1 (1e+02%)
7zip 0 ( 0%)

Block size 65536, number of blocks 1.
Done.

I have tried this a few times and i always seem to get the same message.

I hope i have provided enough information. I have alot more avaible if it's needed.

Any ideas people??????

Thanks

Hi Andrew Bob,

you aren't up to any mischief, are you?

Anyway, just two quick observations:
1. Have you checked the size of the packages that you want to squeeze on that thumb drive?
2. The mkisofs command + parameters from the wiki (Remastering How-To) worked for me. You can also paste it by pressing Shift+Ins in root terminal to prevent typos.

Good luck!

You could use this HOWTO and never have to worry about the big annoying mkisofs commands. http://www.knoppix.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=13867

 Nice plug ... but true ... a very thorough, and evolving howto.

Attacking the problem though ... it appears to be a command line typo, try as i might I could not replicate your error.

The closest I got was

Warning: creating filesystem that does not conform to ISO-9660.
Mkisofs: No such file or directory. Invalid node - hide-rr-moved
Partial read (o bytes of 65536), padding with zeros.
[ 9] Block# 0 size 0 -> 84[compression ratio 100%, overall: 100%]

Statistics:
Gzip(0): 0 ( 0%)
Gzip(1): 0 ( 0%)
Gzip(2): 0 ( 0%)
Gzip(3): 0 ( 0%)
Gzip(4): 0 ( 0%)
Gzip(5): 0 ( 0%)
Gzip(6): 0 ( 0%)
Gzip(7): 0 ( 0%)
Gzip(8): 0 ( 0%)
Gzip(9): 1 (1e+02%)
7zip 0 ( 0%)

Block size 65536, number of blocks 1.
Done.

Close but not exact (Invalid node - hide-rr-moved), my suggestion is type the entire command on one line ommitting the "\"'s.

Conversely you could always ...
use this HOWTO and never have to worry about the big annoying mkisofs commands. http://www.knoppix.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=13867

So i'm not meant to add the "\"s in? Well i'll give it a go.
[giving it a go]
Wow i didn't add in the "\"s and after a few seconds the screen filled with stuff then started going:

[ 9] Block# 25** size 65536 -> ***** [compression ratio **% overall: 37%]
(where ** is a changing number)
[waiting for it finsh]
It has appeared to work but it's about double the size i want to it be.
But i'm going to test it out first and stuff.
Thanks for the help.
Anyone got any idea's on how i can make this thing really small.
I have noticed that other small/lightweight distros (like feather and damn small) change the XFree86 server with the XVesa and/or XFbdev servers. But i think that that might be a bit hard. Anyone tried it and no what 2 do?
Thanks again.

Keep reading these forums and you'll find your answers ... in fact the howto you are following indicates the command for showing you the size of installed packages.

Sadly, i'm sure like most you want the answer now so here is a start:

- KDE and OpenOffice are huge, maybe smaller alternatives will suffice such as fluxbox and vi (now there is few hundred megabytes emancipated :D )
- Remove all games, cruff, and
- Depending on competency and dependancy on assistance you can always remove the man pages.
