I've a Gateway P-3, 128 that I got last year before leaving for Taipei. Didn't do much with it other than check out that it booted.

Now on booting from CPU, it looks for a network installer and then screen freezes with message "SIGNAL Error: fh 81.4KHz and fV99.9HZ.

I changed the boot order so I could boot from Knoppix. Knoppix does bettter: it iterates the peripherals and give verbose output. And then stops: "SIGNAL Error fH 81.4KHz 7 and fV99.9 HZ. The icon for a video in also displays.

I've google on the fH 81.4KHz 7 and fV99.9 HZ, but nothing useful returned. Tried googling on "signal error" and returns too much--especially information about a sound card.

Does anyone have idea about what is happening?

Many thanks,

It sounds like knoppix is doing the best it can at autodetecting the video hardware (perhaps getting it wrong) & then setting a resolution & refresh rate that is beyond the capabilities of the hardware. Try booting knoppix with some Cheat Codes (http://www.knoppix.net/wiki/Cheat_Codes), such as:
knoppix vga=normal screen=800x600 xvrefresh=60
knoppix vga=normal screen=640x480 xvrefresh=60

I hope this helps.
