Hi

I am brand new to Knoppix (and Linux) and think it's great! I'm very excited to be learning. I have successfully burned the boot CD and it works! But I have no idea what I'm doing.... ;(

I would like to know if it's possible to get a better video resolution. I'm currently using the 640x480 with 100Hz refresh. The display has obvious redraw problems, scrolling leaves artifacts and the whole screen "shakes" back-and-forth and gives me a headache in 30 seconds. I have tried all of the video modes available in "Display - Control Center."

Is this a refresh rate problem? I have only 2 options for refresh: 100 Hz(640x480 & 800x600) and 101 Hz (for 1024x768). They all act the same.

I'm using an EMachines T2385:

2.3-GHz Celeron CPU, 512MB of DDR266 SDRAM, Windows XP Professional, 80GB hard drive, 16X DVD-ROM drive, 48X/24X/48X CD-RW drive, integrated Intel Extreme graphics using main memory, 17-inch EMachines EView 17f monitor, AC-97 sound card, EMachines SP-20A speakers, network adapter, V.92 modem, Minitower case.

Thank you!

It sounds like Knoppix is doing the best it can at autodetecting the video hardware (perhaps getting it wrong) & then setting a resolution & refresh rate that is not good for you. Try booting knoppix with some Cheat Codes (http://www.knoppix.net/wiki/Cheat_Codes), such as:
knoppix screen=800x600 xvrefresh=60
knoppix screen=1024x768 xvrefresh=85

I hope this helps.
