Hello,

My issue is very similar to what many people have posted problems about on this board. I have tried every solution thus far and still have not been able to get my sound card to work.

I am running a Dell Dimension 4500 with the Intel onboard sound chip, and for whatever reason, the card can be detected, but it will not produce sounds.

I have tried 'knoppix alsa' cheatcode as well as 'knoppix xmodule-fbdev alsa' and the alsa driver loads, but there still is no sound.

the boot-up error message reads somethign about cannot find module 'sound-slot-0' and 'sound-service-0'

no, the system sound is not muted, and yes, i am part of the 'audio' group.

i have tried all sorts of modprobes, modconfs, and insmods, none work. when I try to insmod the i810_audio.o module, i get the error message:
i810_audio.o: unresolved symbol ac97_probe_codec
i810_audio.o: unresolved symbol ac97_set_dac_rate
i810_audio.o: unresolved symbol ac97_set_adc_rate

when i run sndconfig, it locates my PCI sound card, Model: Intel Corp. 182801DB AC'97 Audio, but when it tries to play the test sound, i get the error messages:

/lib/modules/2.4.20-xfs/kernel/drivers/sound/i810_audio.o: ?
? init_module: No such device ?
? /lib/modules/2.4.20-xfs/kernel/drivers/sound/i810_audio.o: insmod ?
? /lib/modules/2.4.20-xfs/kernel/drivers/sound/i810_audio.o failed ?
? /lib/modules/2.4.20-xfs/kernel/drivers/sound/i810_audio.o: insmod ?
? sound-slot-0 failed

the seemingly relevent sections of dmesg show:

I have been using the 4/10 release, and am now running the 4/18 version (booting from CD), both have the same errors. both of the ISOs passed md5sum check and both work on my laptop computer just fine. i know that the above dmesg made reference to a CD read error, but then this would not explain why it did not work in the previous version, which did not have any of those errors.

is there anything else that i have not tried that might work (besides buying another soundcard/ hdd install)?

thanks,

mike

Do you have legacy support disabled in bios?

On both my hewlett packard and compaq rigs I must have legacy support set to "no" in order to have sound support.

edit* and still try knoppix alsa on boot

Strange, I have sound on my Dell Inspiron which also use the Intel chipset(including sound).

The only problem is that I wanted to test the 'read the web page' feature in Konquerer which I think is cool and innovative but it all went wrong. Anyone tries it ?

ok, perhaps I was unclear.....

WITH the volume in KDE turned all the way up, EVERYTHING unmuted from kmix and aumix, AND my speaker volume turned all the way up on my receiver, all I hear is faint music and even the faint music is grainy and crackly.

any thoughts?

I am having the same exact problem with CMedia 8738 onboard sound card. Volume is all cranked up, but can barley hear it. I found that alsa has a console based volume control. This is the site with commands. I will try this when I get home.

This exact same problem is happening with my i845. At first I thought the surround mode was on, so I installed ALSA and tried turning it off but it didn't help. The sound is extremely faint, and because the PCM is jacked all the way up on the mixer, the quality sucks.

This isn't just in knoppix, my rh9 box does it too...

before anyone even tries: *yes the mixer is up *all the *way***. Everything is completely maxxed out on the mixer and there are no other knobs i can turn up. That's on all the OSS mixers and alsamixer.

My Dell Optiplex GX270 has the same intel integrated audio chip set problem. Anyone find a fix yet?

TIA,

I did have this problem too. The sound was fainted. But I think I solved this by moving the slider of the PCM volume a bit down. May be that'll help. I am not sure if it was PCM, but in any case try this with all of 'em that are maxed out by default ;-).

I have to use this boot string:

knoppix vga=normal screen=1024x768 xvrefresh=60

to get video to work right. 2003.0905 fixed my sound!

I have the ASUS p4pe board, with integrated I850 chipset.
I use the SPdiff output for my speaker system. Where can i change those settings? The board is being found by the system.
But if i want to start aRts it says something about using the NULL: device.
Please help!
