I have read the material to which I was referred about Poor Mans Installation. However, it is not working i.e. I have a 20 gig HD (NTFS), and i recently partitioned it to 4gig (FAT32) for the knoppix image and about 2gig for the Persistent Home(PH). Now, when I load knoppix it is only recogizing the C drive (NTFS) and not the FAT32 drives. I then placed the 4gig (FAT32) drive as primary thinking that it would be detected then, but it wasn't. So I am unable to copy the knoppix to HD using the cheat codes and boot from the hard-drive. If anyone can assist please do and let me know what i am doing wrong. Thanks in advance.

... Now, when I load knoppix "IT" is only recogizing the C drive (NTFS) and not the FAT32 drives...
What "IT" means ? The bios of your pc, Grub or lilo, or knoppix ?
Are you looking for booting from the ISO file or the KNOPPIX big file (included inside the ISO) ?
Can you boot knoppix ? and then Knoppix cannot see your fat32 partition ?

... I then placed the 4gig (FAT32) drive as primary thinking that it would be detected then, but it wasn't.
What do you mean by "be detected" ?
What is your setup ? what is in your mbr ? what bootloader are you using ? ntldr (xp), grub, lilo,... ?
Can you describe what happen step by step ?
If you are looking for help, you need to describe your setup with much more details.
And please remember that we all do help others during our free time...

Thanks for your reply.
What I was trying was the Poor Mans Install. According to the manual that I got from the internet, I should partition my HD into FAT32 and/or ext2 file system to enable Knoppix to be writable and readable to that partition and in effect boot/load from those partitions. Now that was what I did. I have a 20gig HD (NTFS) which I partitioned into 4gig and 2gig FAT32 file systems to house the knoppix big file and the Persistent Home respectively. Now, when I boot from the Live CD and go into the root file to the (mnt/hd) where I could access my HD through Knoppix I am only able to access the C drive (i.e. the NTFS portion of the HD and not able to see or access the FAT32 portions of the HD). As a result I am unable to use the cheat code that would enable me to copy Knoppix to the HD and boot from there as it is only recognizing the NTFS portion of the HD and being that it can't write to it, that boot/load process failed.

->Can you boot knoppix ? and then Knoppix cannot see your fat32 partition ? <Yes, I can boot Knoppix normally using the Live CD but it cannot see/detect the FAT32 partition>

->What do you mean by "be detected" ? <Knoppic OS being able to view and access the FAT32 partition>

->What is your setup ? what is in your mbr ? what bootloader are you using ? ntldr (xp), grub, lilo,... ? <Setup???, I have 378 mbr. I am not using a bootloader as I am utilizing the Poor Mans Install method>

N.B. All that was done (i.e. the partitioning) was intended so I would be able to use the cheat code to copy Knoppix ISO to the FAT32 4gig partition and load from there in the future using the cheat code. While using the FAT32 2gig partition as the Persistent Home.

I hope this helps you in figuring out how to help me. Many thanks for your assistance.

Ok, let me try to rephrase it with my own words to verify I understand you properly:
You have in your system a single 20GB ATA drive (non scsi nor sata) with 3 partitions as follow: (and no other int/ext hdd on your system)
1) a primary NTFS of ?GB (with Windows XP ?)
2) a 4GB Fat32 extended partition (reserved for the knoppix system)
3) a 2GB Fat32 extended partition (reserved for your persistent home)
You have obviously verified that you can read and write to and from all 3 partitions (from Windows).
You can boot Knoppix 4.02 from the CD but can only have read access to your ntfs partition.
Or in other words, you cannot have access to any of your two Fat32 partitions, and you don't even see the partitions icons on your desktop.

If all this is correct, I suppose that there is something wrong in your setup since I have a very similar setup working on a few computers (laptops and desktops) It could be a defective partition table. (that could happen if you move the hdd from one computer used for the partitionning to the target computer which may have a different bios and LBA handling)

There is also more than one "Poor Man Install". Find below a link to the "Windows Partition PMI" which allow you to boot from the iso directly being on a ntfs partition. So there is no need for your first 4gb Fat32 partition and this is actually my prefered solution, cf: http://www.knoppix.net/wiki/Win_Partition

Hope this helps.

Gilles

Thanks for the advice.

I am going to try this and inform you of the results. But let me make sure, on the website that you referred me, its only the Grub.exe I will need to download? Or is there something else that I might need?

Thanks again.

It depends what you want to do. I am using grub.exe to boot from dos in the case of a usb dongle boot.
If you want to boot from the xp boot loader (XP install), then you will need grldr and add a line in the boot.ini.
Could you please confirm your setup and explain what you are trying to achieve.
