I have a Dell Dimension 4100. A Lucent WinModem is on COM3. I've tried various combinations of options to get KPPP 2.2.0 (Using KDE 3.3) to work, but it always reports the modem is busy.

Modems - Edit... Device
Modem device /dev/ttyS2 (tried several others)
Flow control... (tried Hardware, Software, and None)

Modem
Query Modem... => "The modem is busy." (The modem is NOT being used.)

Lucent winmodem need driver to work. Kppp is only humble servant, that mediates between functional modem and your ISP. It can't help you any other way. Nice site to start with is http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/

You can try this too http://distrowatch.com/2964 "new autodetected LT winmodems" it realy works out of the box, my personal experience. No driver, no nothing . Just in case... Modem is on /dev/modem not any of ttyS*. ttyS* are for external, serial modems.
