when i first used knoppix it was a boot disk on a laptop about half a year ago and on boot up you would hear "initiating boot sequence"

It's still there. Some systems seem to have issues with Knoppix detecting their audio however.

Not sure waht to tell you then; I still hear it when I boot 4.0.2 DVD. Are you using the same system that you last heard it on? Can you boot the old CD and hear it?

Control Center > Sound & Multimedia > System Notifications
For "Event Source" select "KDE System Notifications"
Under "Events" select "KDE is starting up"
Under "Actions" click the browse button on the far right. Scroll all the way to the end. select "startup.ogg"

That should do it.
