I had 3 partitions in my SATA MAXTOR DIAMOND MAX of 200MB. I only wanted to format the c:\, but I couldnt do it with Windows XP cd cause it didnt recognized my disk. So I tried to use the Maxtor instalation program. I had an option to write 00 in all sectors of the disk, but I thought it would only affect c:. To my horror i realized it started to do it to ALL THE DRIVE! I panicked and made reboot to the Pc. The process was still at 0% (yes, zero percent!), but now I can't acess my drives and the diagnostic program says the disk is empty!

I really need the data in the other 2 partitions. Is there a way to get them back?? Its impossible for them to have been phsysically deleted if the process was still at 0 percent.

PLEASE HELP ME, I'M CLUELESS ABOUT WHAT TO DO! I was reading about knoppix, but im not sure if it will work in my disk since its a SATA...

I googled around and found a presentation by Kyle Rankin, author of "Knoppix Hacks", who goes by the nickname 'greenfly'.

OSCON - 2005-08-04
System Rescue with Knoppix
http://www.greenfly.org/talks/knoppix/rescue-oscon05.html

Read through the presentation and find gpart which is a MBR and partition table recovery tool. The presentation has instructions on how to use gpart.

There is also something called linux disk editor, which might be useful. I'm not sure if it's included in the latest cd but I have used it in the past: http://lde.sourceforge.net/
