After over 1 year absence from Knoppix (using PCLinuxOS, Ubuntu now), I tried Knoppix 4.0.2 today, because I got it with my EasyLinux magazine. And wow, I was really disappointed to see that former Linux flagship in such a bad shape:
Not only that it still does not test for/use DMA on my Athlon64 system, it still comes with XFree86 and still does not recognise my NVidia 5700 grafics card and uses the VESA (!!!!!) driver - folks, we have 2006 coming in 6 weeks, Xorg is out since 1,5 yrs and a NVidia 5700 is now one of the older cards. Not even one distro I tried (except Kanotix) since I have that card failed to detect the 5700. Only Knoppix did and still does.
But worse, Knoppix hang during network detecting. I have a buildin Realtek LAN (comes with my Via NeoK8T) and a RA2500 WLAN PCI card. Not only does Knoppix still not get a IP from my router (Zyxel DSL) from eth0 (LAN, DHCP also still broken), it completely stopped working after detecting my RA2500 - the manufacturer itself offers FOSS drivers! The RA2500 is THE WLAN card for Linux - but Knoppix completely fails. Wow.
All distros I tried in the last 6 months can work with the card, including WPA. And no problems with LAN/DHCP of course.
So no exotic hardware, but a desastrous result on a 08/15 desktop system, as we say in German for a normal desktop system. Currently, I have 5 distro installed on this system (Suse 10, Ubuntu Breezy, Linspire 5.0, Xandros 3.0, PCLOS 9.1) and they are all working like without problems.
Knoppix is not doing a favour to the reputation of Linux with this version.
(yes I know its free and we are all volunteers - but still we want to encourage people to use Linux - but a Windows user trying this Knoppix will not come back soon to Linux!) So please do not flame me - I appreciate of course the work that Mr. Knopper and all the others did, but I think it is necessary to give a very clear and open feedback, because I do not think that my system is special in any way.
