View Full Version : Knoppix 4.0.2 really broken.

After over 1 year absence from Knoppix (using PCLinuxOS, Ubuntu now), I tried Knoppix 4.0.2 today, because I got it with my EasyLinux magazine. And wow, I was really disappointed to see that former Linux flagship in such a bad shape:

Not only that it still does not test for/use DMA on my Athlon64 system, it still comes with XFree86 and still does not recognise my NVidia 5700 grafics card and uses the VESA (!!!!!) driver - folks, we have 2006 coming in 6 weeks, Xorg is out since 1,5 yrs and a NVidia 5700 is now one of the older cards. Not even one distro I tried (except Kanotix) since I have that card failed to detect the 5700. Only Knoppix did and still does.

But worse, Knoppix hang during network detecting. I have a buildin Realtek LAN (comes with my Via NeoK8T) and a RA2500 WLAN PCI card. Not only does Knoppix still not get a IP from my router (Zyxel DSL) from eth0 (LAN, DHCP also still broken), it completely stopped working after detecting my RA2500 - the manufacturer itself offers FOSS drivers! The RA2500 is THE WLAN card for Linux - but Knoppix completely fails. Wow.

All distros I tried in the last 6 months can work with the card, including WPA. And no problems with LAN/DHCP of course.

So no exotic hardware, but a desastrous result on a 08/15 desktop system, as we say in German for a normal desktop system. Currently, I have 5 distro installed on this system (Suse 10, Ubuntu Breezy, Linspire 5.0, Xandros 3.0, PCLOS 9.1) and they are all working like without problems.

Knoppix is not doing a favour to the reputation of Linux with this version.

(yes I know its free and we are all volunteers - but still we want to encourage people to use Linux - but a Windows user trying this Knoppix will not come back soon to Linux!) So please do not flame me - I appreciate of course the work that Mr. Knopper and all the others did, but I think it is necessary to give a very clear and open feedback, because I do not think that my system is special in any way.

Your system is not the only system that Knoppix is used on.
Knoppix is based on Debian.
Unlike a normal HD installable distro, Knoppix is a Live CD/DVD.
Knoppix does not have the developer support like Fedora or Suse or Linspire.

Knoppix is mostly based on Debian stable which was released this past June. It was only after the sarge release that the developers could then begin to add updated packages like X.org or OO.org 2, see http://www.debian-administration.org/articles/185. Since Knoppix is based on XFree86 and not X.org, as you might imagine, much of the autodetect code has been written for Xfree86. It will have to be updated & rewritten for X.org inclusion in Knoppix. If you think Xfree86 to X.org is a drop in replacement and an easy task, then you are incorrect. I suspect that a future version of Knoppix will be X.org based since that is the path that Debian & Debian derivatives are taking.

Of the distros you mentioned, practically all of them are designed to be installed to the HD and then can be patch upgraded later so that bugs can be fixed, nonGPL/non-Free packages can be added (flash, java, realplayer), wireless drivers & firmware can be added. You use Suse 10 & Ubuntu Breezy both of which have a huge community following & tend to be cutting edge releases both released in October. Almost all the distros you use have the backing of a large body of developers or even a corporation. Knoppix just does not have same amount of people supporting it. Practically all of us here are not Knoppix developers but are just community volunteers. You are free to contribute to this forum or even better, contact Klaus Knoppix & help integrate X.org into Knoppix.

As for your wireless problem, bugs are going to exist in all distros. It seems that your RA card has run into one. See http://www.knoppix.net/wiki/Wireless_Networking#Linux_Wireless_Network_Issues


In the end, Knoppix is not broken but parts of it do need work. You may report your bugs here http://www.knoppix.net/bugs/ and if possible please begin to either help out on these forums or the documentation wiki. If you have the skills please contact Klaus so that Knoppix can be better.

thank you for the reply and the good explanations - but frankly:

Do you think a new user is interested in WHY Knoppix is failing so badly on standard hardware? IMHO he is not - he just sees that "linux" does not work for him.... And my fear is that many people will not give "Linux" a second try then.

I owe Knoppix my switch away from Windows 2 yrs ago, after I tried DLD (Linux kernel 0.99... :-) ) and then Suse 8.1 without success. Knoppix was the first really working Linux for me. So maybe you can understand that I am now disappointed that it has obviously lost a lot of the technical superiority it once had. Anyway, I hope my lspci helps a little bit, but since Knoppix completely hangs during boot, I can not offer more than the error descriptions in my first posting.

your doing something wrong. my box has almost identical specs.

here it the output from my 800mhz VIA box i bought online at walmart.com for onefiddy going on three years ago. for me, everything works automagically; third party tv card, linuxjack quicknet card, build in audio, ethernet dhcp, video @60hz.

Knoppix 4.0.2 (with union fs) is rocking my world on this machine right now. 3.4 and 3.7 were good on it too. however, i did throw more ram at is as the stock 128m made the disk thrash too much.

your hardware may not be exotic, but it is definately not a standard machne.
