Does knoppix need drivers to support external modems?? No, if it is serial modem. Go to kppp and setup - put your user name, password, tel.number of your provider, IP dynamic, modem will be dev/ttyS0 or ttyS1. Lower your conection speed wich by default is very high (460000) to, say, 56000 or 115000.

Well I did all those settings and set my connection speed to a lower one as u said, but when i connect thru kppp it tells -modem status ok- initializing modem -after that nothing happens-
What could be the pblm?? :? :?:

Which dev did you setup ttyS0, ttyS1, this must be exact match. Do not connect first but use Query - it will find (or not!) modem. If not, change ttySx and try again.

I did query and it produced a window with ATI query listed and a lot of blank boxes.

I connected it to COM1 in Windows Is its equivalent in linux is ttyS0??

OH
Its nt an ordinary External Modem, Its a phone Kyocera-2235 thats its brand.it is nt a mobile phone but functions as Wireless Phone connection instead of ordinary cable based telephones. It canbe used as a std 33600bps modem as they people say in windows (its true as i found) but when i asked the local service provider, he dosent knew whether it will work in Linux, the phone manual is quiet abt this and Im left out with almost no hope. Can anyone find a way out?

How is your std modem connected to your PC? Over serial cable? If yes, than this is external, seral modem and can work without drivers. If not, I don't know, none experience with wireless modems.

Ya its connected to PC by a serial cable.
What I meant by wireless is that in places where phone cables are absent the phone companies provide a wireless connection Its similar to a mobile phone, the equipment is kyocera 2235 set.
It can be connected to the pc by a cable, it works as a std 33600bps modem under any windows versions. And my question is can it be configured under Linux ie Knoppix 4
