Check first that /tmp is owned by the root and same thing with /tmp/.ICE-unix. Persmissons should be like this:

drwxrwxrwt 2 root root 80 2005-12-23 17:42 .ICE-unix

If it is not right (or even not existing) do like this:

mkdir /tmp/.ICE-unix
chmod 1777 /tmp/.ICE-unix
chown root:root /tmp/.ICE-unix

That should work (works for me). I have made many remasterings from Knoppix 3.8 to 4.+.2 and there has been some changes in some minor things to get KDE started right because of different KDE versions (used KDE 3.3.2 -> 3.5.0). Anyhow, Underscore's howto is almost up-to-date and should work.

Have you copied /etc/X11/X.F86Config-4 from your system to your remaster directory?

There is tree things to do to get KDE started:
1. Copy XF86Config-4 from your working system to remaster partition (/etc/X11/XF86Config-4)
2. Change owner of /tmp to the root and give right permissions (1777). Make also subdirectory /tmp/.ICE-unix and change owner to the root and give same permissions.
3. Copy /etc/skel to /home/knoppix and change owner and group to knoppix (chown -R knoppix:knoppix /home/knoppix).

You must start X from CD (or DVD) or otherwise you get an error message (if you have an other hostname than knoppix): 'sudo: unable to lookup your_box via gethostbyname ()'.
You must also have existing /etc/init.d/xsession and /etc/X11/Xsession.d/45xsession files to get KDE started.

I'm such a tool!!! I had run the command but it DIDN'T copy the file in question. I have completed all other commands and now have a working customisation :-)

Stay tuned for my next bout of Questions.

Many Thanks

John
