OK, the live CD worked great, but i wanted it to be on the hdd. I followed the irongeek tutorial exactly the same (except the username, and passwords, and my hdd is a great deal smaller, so my swap was 512mb, but the other one was only about 4gb)

So after installing it, i boot it up, it seems to be working, then it will say:

Kernel Panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(3,2)

Any ideas, and this is on an old amd 400mhz Compaq laptop.

Have a look in here: http://www.knoppix.net/wiki/Win_Partition
and here: http://www.knoppix.net/forum/viewtopic.php?p=98279#98279
This an other way to have Knoppix installed in the hdd.

I had the same problem on my box. The grub config file had put a line in for the Linux boot that had "ro ###" in it. You need to make that portion of the line to read "ro ramdisk". This can be done when the boot menu comes up, just hit the "e" key to edit. If this works you can go back and edit the config file in the /boot/grub/ directory.

Good Luck for another newbie.
