Want samba: can't ping, will repond to ping, internet works

I am trying to set up samba with my XP box. I can ping the Knoppix machine from windows fine. But can not ping the XP from Knoppix. I don't get an error message, after the ping command the prompt just drops to the next line. Internet does work.

Classic error from the rather lame and useless XP software firewall. I always use a hardware and a software firewall, but the Microsoft one is worse than useless. Disable it and get a real software firewall.

It was a firewall, not Windows but Zone Alarm. My LAN works fine now.
