Using a USB thumbdrive as a hard drive.

I am learning linux slowly with my live cd. But i am getting tired of losing all my saved info. I read somewhere about a way to make your thumbdrive act as a hard drive. I was wondering if anyone could help me on this one and tell me how to do do it.
