ok so heres what i am doing:

1. Load up Linux from boot disk
2. Go to konsole
3. Typed the fallowing in order:

a. ifconfig eth0 up

b. iwconfig eth0 mode monitor --> when i did this it said:
"Error for wireless reqiest "set mode" (8B06): set failed on device eth0 ; Operation not supported

c. (after ignoring that) i opend "Aidrodump (traffic recorder)"

d. typed in the aidrodumb "airodump eth0 tocrack" --> when i did this it said:
"unsupported hardware link type 1 expected ARPHRD_IEEE80211 or ARPHRD_IEEE80211_PRISM did you put your card in monitor mode"

e. Well no i obviously did not put my card in monitor mode as a result of step b!!!!! not allowing for it to go into monitor mode!!!!!!!!!
4. Got angry and went back to windows in defeat...

So anyways dose anybody know why my wireless card wouldent go into monitor mode???
Is there a driver i need to download?
If so were do i get it and how do i install it (dose it have to be loaded up from a memory stick?)

Heres my setup:
Presario R3000 (spescificly: Compaq Presario R3060CA)
Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN
Do you need any other information???

All help is appreciated!!!!

Thank you, pigs

if your input is exactly what you posted it as.....
then you were trying to set your eth0 ( ethernet - 0 ) interface to monitor mode....
meaning you were trying to tell your rj-45 jack to do something with RF.....not gonna happen
try those same commands with wlan0 (wireless lan - 0) and see if that helps...
never give up and go to windoze......

oh i forgot....
i have a very similar laptop (R3440CA) which had the exact same wlan card.... on an AMD 64 arch
i run gentoo and needed to get the windows 64-bit wireless drivers and use a package called "ndiswrapper" to run the windows drivers is a linux environment.
That being said, it has ususally been hassle free, though some times it will refuse to change essid which is a pain in the but....
I am not sure about how one would get this package in debian as I only use knoppix as a boot/rescue CD.
Just out of curiousity, what are your laptop specs......

mine AMD 64 3000+
80GB HD
1GB RAM
nvidia go 64MB onboard video
broadcom 802.11/ g-b

oh snap i forgot one other thing.....

our cards do not support monitor mode.....so no cracking with these cards....

what you want to do to locate essid s is this

iwlist wlan0 scan.....
