HellO everyone.

In Mumbai, India a internet service provider called Pacenet exists.

The connection is thru a LAN card.
In WinXP they provide internet by installing a protocol called raspppoe.
Then they install a program.. whr we have to give the username and password.

In Knoppix I tried sudo pppoeconf... the network was detected .. it asked for my username and password.. but then i wasnt connected to the internet.

I called up the customer care n they said i need to pay 40% more to get internet on linux.

Can they actually block my connection coz i use linux? or are they doing this so dat they dont have to bother with supporting linux.

Please help me connect to the internet on this service.

According to http://www.raspppoe.com/, raspppoe is just a PPPoE implimentation. I don't know why the pppoe software in Knoppix isn't working for you, but this reinforces my basic belief that most network issues present here would simply "go away" if people used simple inexpensive NAT routers. With such a router you don't need to run PPPoE software on your computer at all, the router takes care of PPPoE for you.

I would buy a router anyway for it's other benefits. But it should be extremely obvious that buying an inexpensive router once is a better deal than paying 40% more on each Internet bill.
