I have downloaded the iso image of Knoppix v 4.0.2 and burned it on CD .But when I intend to boot from the CD, after main screen which requires the return key to be pressed, I get the message;

Scanning for USB/Firewire devices...Done
Can't find Knoppix filesystem sorry. Dropping you to an (very limited) shell. Press reset button to quit.

What is the problem and how can be solved? Thank you.

**There are many like that in forum but really couldnt understand the case as a new user. Sorry for the new thread.

It sounds like your problem may be caused by a few things.

1. A corrupt disk or iso file, or a cd/dvd burned at too high a speed. 4X is about right for both. Anything faster and it may fail to be read. The iso file can be checked with an MD5 utility. You can do a quick check to see if the list of files on the CD is complete by using the testcd command on boot up. It could also be bad media. I have seen numerous defective disks of different manufacture. It's a common issue.

2. The need to use the "knoppix dma" cheatcode at the "boot:" prompt during boot up.

Downloading by Bittorrent is the most successful way to download. FTP or HTTP will many times result in a corrupt file.

More information can be found through the "Documentation" link at the top of this page. Here are a few links to take you to some useful information.

Not having experienced this issue myself, it's difficult to determine it's root cause. One other thing I did forget to add before. Some drives have a preference for media. One of my laptops has a QSI drive and simply will not boot from DVD-R media. Burn it to a DVD+R disc and all is well. Don't remember the errors I encountered, but don't recall the one you listed.

The only real cause I can think of is a media issue or a drive/drive controller issue. Try to enable dma using the "knoppix dma" cheatcode as I suggested before. Might want to try "knoppix nodma" just in case it has been enabled and is giving errors as the ones you describe. There is a mention in the Wiki about this concern if you care to look through the "Documentation" links at the top of the page.
