Knoppix seems to recognize my SB 16 PCI but plays no sounds whatsoever (yes, volume is up, cables connected). Anyone want to give me a rough guide of steps I should take to get to the problem?

Output of lspci -v (Knoppix was booted with alsa)

hmm. im not sure why you would be booting with alsa loading but try this... had a latop that needed this once.

in a root shell type:

modprobe sb

then check to see if it loads up the module by typing:

lsmod

and check to see if it loaded SB anywhere on that list.

if it in fact did try out XMMS or something of the sort.

note: you may have to boot into command console and then start KDE in order to get the sound working in the right order but...

drop me a line by e-mail for more reliable and in-depth answers... just saw this while forum surfing.
