remastering using scripts

i am trying to remaster using scripts, but when i am trying to apt-get install synaptic, it comes up with an error :

package synaptic is not available but is reffered to by another package
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted or is only available by another source
E: synaptic has no installation candidate

Please help

I'm using knoppix v4.0

what version of Knoppix do you remastering? did you run
apt-get update at least once? what do you have in /etc/apt/sources.list?
