How about the possibility of burning Knoppix or the boot part of it, on to
a BIOS chip and the rest onto the hard disk, so that Knoppix Linux boots almost instantly.

I am thinking maybe the ROM image could be written to a non-volitile SODIMM mounted on a PCI IDE controller card. It is feasible to have the ROM on the Primary IDE channel and Persistant Home on a SODIMM on the secondary IDE channel. I know the price for flash memory is still a little high for such an implementation, but the price is dropping and looks to continue to drop for quite some time. Of course, mounting the controller chip and and SODIMMS right onto an all-in-one motherboard would be the ultimate. 8)
