Kmix: could not hear line in on speaker out

Knop5 and Knop4 both appear to have no output mixer controls to hear
Line-In (on the master out). (Dell optiplex GX240)
(WinXP mixer has both Line & Mic out-mix)
Does Kmix have a config file hack to fix this?

(I also tried the other mixer; still no go)
Audacity records line in (44khz only so far) and plays back ok
(IF I use Kmix to switch record BACK to line in after every volume chg - how do I switch Audacity input to Line?).
Will Audacity loop through to playback (would be ok for now, but not good)?

(I reply to myself because I found the solution)
To monitor inputs, use the headphone volume control on output tab.
If no sound, verify green light above it (and main) are lit.
If no sound, check input tab, be sure both red and green are lit on each
input slider you want to record+monitor.

This does not solve the problem of balancing monitor out for line & mic -
you get the input mix on the monitor.
This may usually be ok, but we should have a choice.
