My problem seems to be the mbr its invalid after a knoppix installation

I’m trying to install the knoppix 4 cd onto my laptop’s hard drive
I originally tried the v5 dvd and cd but could not get any of the boot cheats to work and the installation was unsuccessful

My laptop Spec’s are
IPC Web@book
Pentium 4 2000ghz
Memory 512mb

As far as I know there is nothing special about this computer, there is no other operating system
Installed but it did have windows xp running smoothly before I wiped it all off

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Here’s what I did with the install, hope it helps you to help me.

First off I downloaded the iso and did a md5 check, all ok
Then I Burnt the iso to a (datawrite) cd with Nero, again all seems ok.

This was all on my other computer running windows xp with an ntfs filesystem
(I dont think that makes any differance but im not 100% sure)

Next I booted the laptop from the live cd and partitioned the hard drve into 3 parts

Hda1 format ext2 18 gig
Hda2 format ext2 8.5 gig
Hda3 swap 1.5 gig

After this I rebooted the live cd again and entered knoppix lang=en at the boot prompt

Once it was running I used sudo knoppix-installer

I selected the beginner install with hardware detect, I selected hda1 as the installation destination with the boot loader in mbr
(I have also tried the same set-up with the bootloader on root partition).
When asked to make a boot disk I said no (I have no floppy on my laptop)

Everything seemed to install fine with no errors, the only thing that was reported was
Swapon /dev/hda3: device or resources busy
I also noticed the file system was converted to the reiserfs file system.

I have followed this procedure on a number of other systems with no problems, however….
When the laptop reboots the mbr is invalid and the computer will not start?

Has anyone got any ideas how to fix this or get round it in some way?
I am no wiz with linux and have no idea how to set-up grub or lilo. But I’m more then willing to try anything that might help

The only reason i want to install, is so i can free my cd drive and using the bootfrom cheat code is a bit inconvenient

Thanks for any help anyone can give
Stephen
