View Full Version : Incrementing wireless ethernet port numbers

Hi All,

I'm a relative noob to Knoppix and Linux in general, so please bear with me if I don't understand things :roll:

I've just moved from 4.01 to 5.01. I have a Compaq nc6120 laptop with an Intel 2200BG internal wlan card. OS is running from the DVD, whilst the /home and configs are on a USB flash.

On running "wlanconfig" in 4.01, and running the "sudo pump -i eth0" command, the wlan port was always seen as "eth0", would gain an IP Address and connect to the wlan.

I have configured my 5.01 config to use the IPW firmware drivers with an addition to the "knoppix.sh" script, as found elsewhere in the forum.
On running "wlanconfig", the wlan ethernet numbers are incrementing by themselves after each reboot. Currently the wlan port is registered as "eth7"!
I obviously have to change the "sudo pump -i eth" command to suit the port number "wlanconfig" allocates every time.

How can I stop this from happening, and always see the ethernet port as "0"?

The addition to "knoppix.sh" is as follows:

cp /mnt/sda1/ipw2200-fw-3.0/* /usr/lib/hotplug/firmware
modprobe -r ipw2200
modprobe ipw2200

And the IPW drivers are located in the correct place for the above to work....

No, I surmised that your network settings would be saved and restored when you boot so that with each cycle a "new" adapter would be added. Apparently, this isn't the case.

Hmmmm..... the problems get better! This has now stayed as eth7 and stopped incrementing. I have also found that I can't save my config to sda1, as it's not an option in the device selection screen..... I'm starting to think my best option is to roll back to a previous release :roll: :(

That's not your best option. Why not consider the abundant advice that Knoppix isn't good for hard disk installs (http://www.knoppix.net/wiki/HD_Install_Warning_not_to_do_it) and use Debian Etch, get the newest software without the problems and be able to install and update without problems?

Thanks for the advice, Harry! I've just had a *quick* look at Etch, and it looks to me that it's a hard disk installation. Please correct me if I'm wrong!
The reason I chose knoppix, is that it's a live cd. I run it on my works laptop which has a Windoze installation on it. I can't use that for private use. So, it's a run from CD job, with home and config on a USB flash for my own stuff.
The other problem I have with this version I've noticed is that 5.01 won't save my config or write to home on sda1. When I get to the "save config to..." option screen, it only sees the floppy to write to. My laptop hasn't got one! On the other hand, 4.02 will let me write to sda1 with no problem at all....... HELLLLLPPPP! :?

You're absolutely right about Etch, I was following too many threads at once and both your problem and the term "roll back" led to to the wrong conclusion that you were talking about an install. I have found that knoppix 5.0.1 is very problem prone in the wifi area and that 4.02 is a much better choice for me anyway. Knoppix has never ben particularly great with wireless however.

Another distro that I have found that has better wifi support than Knoppix is Mandriva (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mandriva). I don't care for the Live CD as much as Knoppix, but if what you care about is support for your wifi device then it might help.

I've also never had good results with the persistant configuration or home directory. I hopy you do solve your problem and post the fix.
