winmodem found during configure, but shows busy

Hi; new to forum. Trying my brand new Koppix 5.0.1 on HP a520n tower, normally an XP machine. The Agere soft-modem uses COM3. I feel sure knoppix sees the modem because if I specify wrong port, the message change to something like not found. If I specify /dev/ttyS2 (equivalent to DOS's COM3) it says busy. Any help appreciated! :?

Knoppix does not come with drivers for your modem, however this post and it's links might be of help.
