apt-get stops downloading from around 74% to 77% when updating from http://ftp.de.debian.org unstable/main Packages. I have tried 3 different mirrors, same problem. There is no error message other than the server may have timed out and try again. Other smaller repositories ( less than 4MB ) update without issues and I can install from them. Is UNIONFS running out of space? My ramdisk is 3% used and UNIONFS is 84% used. I'm using Knoppix 5.01. Synaptic has the same problem.

amount of free space to the place you are saving to could be a problem.
a left field entry could be that when you get to 74% you start to use a part of the drive that is not very good and the drive is doing re-reads slowing the download to an almost halt

smartctl -i -A /dev/hda
will show some details that might be interpretable

The problem was the transparent proxy on my IPCop firewall which I think is based on Squid. When switched off, apt-get updates without error. Maybe increasing the proxy object size will fix this. Thanks for your reply.
